Las controversias alrededor de su Ministro de Bienestar Social, López Rega, no la ayudaron en la coyuntura general. Algunos militares le recomendaron la renuncia de la Presidente, pero ella no la acepto; la situación económica y política del país continuaron empeorando, y el 24 de Marzo de 1976, fue detenida por oficiales de la fuerza aérea y mantenida en su casa bajo arresto por cinco años. En 1981 fue condenada por actividades de corrupción, pero fue puesta en libertad bajo palabra en el verano de ese año, viajando a España.
