The recent cyberattacks in Australia led to an increased behaviour of people logging in to check their financial accounts - particularly any they may not necessarily check often - in a short time span (leading to additional software crashes). This also impacted people's perception of reliability and security of big companies that were affected by the cyberattacks.

If there is no network, I feel I would be very bored. To put it bluntly, I would say that mobile phone is one of the activities that can help me relax and entertain myself. At the same time, if the network is interrupted, it will also affect my daily study. Because I usually need to search for materials and other things, and all these require the use of the network.

Once when I was picking up a takeaway, my mobile phone suddenly lost signal and I couldn't get in touch with the delivery man. I was very panicked at that time, and this seemingly ‘small problem’ directly interrupted the rhythm of my life, and made me realise that my reliance on the Internet was much deeper than I had thought.

The way we live, learn, communicate and think is deeply dependent on digital infrastructure, but at the same time, this dependence is fragile. When the system breaks down, so does our ‘autonomy’ - we can't access resources, turn in assignments, or even connect with others.

Every night or early in the morning, the Wi-Fi signal in my house becomes extremely weak, and sometimes it even happens during the day. It’s especially frustrating when the internet suddenly goes down while we’re watching TV. Moments like these make me realize how much we rely on stable digital infrastructure—and how quickly things can fall apart when it fails.

The recent Microsoft crash caused a huge disruption. I couldn’t fulfill my role as a receptionist, but I was happy because we got to go home early. However, it also made me realise just how reliant I am on digital systems. Without them, I literally couldn’t do my job, which was a bit scary. It made me more aware of the fragility of these systems and how dependent we’ve become on them.

A few days ago, I was using Google Maps to get to a job interview in a part of the city I’d never been to. Halfway there, the app suddenly froze and stopped loading routes. My phone had signal, but the app wouldn’t update, and I ended up taking a wrong turn that made me 10 minutes late. That moment was super stressful. I realized how much I rely on GPS without thinking—I didn’t even check the route beforehand because I trusted the app completely. When it stopped working, I had no backup plan, and it shook my confidence. It made me question how we've outsourced basic spatial awareness to digital systems.
