They felt Indigenous societies were not worthy of conservation, nor were their loss worth lamenting. The Europeans were seeking control, and they obtained it by any means necessary. But with its dominating cannons and muskets they forgot to respect the amount of years that were spent by the indigenous people in the so called New World. Take out the "I" and this is ready to be included in a university essay.

Here after reading the article! I feel like I couldn't have worded my feelings regarding the passage from that book better. History is 100% told by those privileged enough to have a voice. People like Black. He uses his voice to push racist ideologies and spread misinformation. I am however determined to be more critical of the history I read, and to look deeper into who's exactly I'm reading from.

Just from reading the title of Conrad Black’s book “Rise to Greatness: the History of Canada” I was expecting complete objectivity in the excerpt. As I progressed through the excerpt, it became clear Black’s writing was filled with personal judgment. Another thing I noticed was there were no citations/quotations from experts etc. so I questioned the legitimacy of the information presented especially because of its biased nature, (Was the information well researched? Did he obtain correct information through credible and correct sources?). I thought Mr. Black would have showcased examples of supporting evidence throughout the excerpt. And lastly, I just wanted to touch on Mr. Black’s complete disregard of the Indigenous Peoples contributions to Canadian history. After all it was the Indigenous Peoples who helped Europeans adapt to the Canadian climate/environment, offered their own natural remedies for illnesses, taught Europeans ways to transport around (i.e., kayaks, canoes, snowshoeing etc.) and many, many other things?! Was this not good enough to acknowledge or mention?

European settlement in Canada, according to Black, has had a significant impact on the indigenous culture, education, and way of life. In general, make it a more civilized country. He also depicts negative aspects of indigenous people, such as their use of alcohol, which has no historical significance. I believe is unnecessary to mention when writing about history. In short, it's an interesting excerpt, but I believe it's more of a political anthology than a historical one.

Maimonah
