One question that I have come up with reading the book " Out of my Mind" is if all people with disabilities are stereotyped as she is. Even her doctors that work with people like her everyday assume that she is mentally disabled just because of her physical disability. People should be able to look past what people look like on the outside and see what people are like on the inside.

There are lots of ways that I can connect to the book " Out of my Mind". One way that I can connect to this book is because Melody is judged by how she looks, and sometimes I am judged by how I look. The clothes that I wear sometimes make me fit into certain stereotypes, and the same was true for Melody. Melody was judged because she was physically disabled, and people assumed that she was mentally disabled, because of her physical disability. Because of the clothes that I wear, sometimes people assume that I have certain friends, or that I have a certain personality. This isn't true for me or for Melody, and people should get to know someone before they judge them or make assumptions about them.

Based on the end of the story, I can infer that after the story occurred, Melody was much more respected at school, and the other kids at school were better at accepting kids that are different from them, and were less likely to make stereotypes. I infer this because during the story kids in Melodies class all treated her like she was mentally disabled, when she really wasn't. When the kids realized what Melody was capable of, they were all very surprised. I think that this experience would have taught the children how to accept kids like Melody, and would make them better people overall.

The passage in Out of my Mind that creates the best visual in my mind is the passage at the beginning of the story where it states, " They see a girl with short, dark, curly hair strapped into a pink wheelchair" and " Her body tends to move on its own agenda, with feet sometimes kicking out unexpectedly and arms occasionally flailing, connecting with whatever is close by." These two statements help me visualize throughout the rest of the book because whenever I visualize Melody, I see a little girl with curly brown hair strapped into a pink wheelchair kicking her feet, unable to do anything else.

The main that events that occur in the book " Out of my Mind" can be summarized. Melody is a young girl living with a disability that prevents her from speaking and can't move efficiently. This prevents her from going to school like a normal child. When Melody enters fifth grade, she gets a device called a Medi-Talker that allows her to "speak" for the first time through a computer. This allows her to participate more normal in classes and join a quiz team that she excels at. The team makes it far into quiz competitions, but during nationals, not everything goes as planned.

The main character, Melody changes in many ways mentally and physically throughout the book. Melody changes physically throughout the book because at the beginning, she is unable to speak, and can only point to things on her talking board to say. However, towards the middle of the book, Melody gets a device that allows her to speak for the first time. Melody changes mentally because in the beginning of the book, Melody has trouble controlling her condition, and will often let people judge her and have tantrums, however in the end of the book she shows everyone that she is confident and sticks up for herself, such as when she confronts the quiz team.

There were several events that helped develop the plot of this story and these events were; Melody starting regular school, Melody getting her medi-talker, Melody studying and trying out for the quiz team, Melody making the quiz team, Melodie's team leaving her behind at the airport, her mom hitting Penny with the car, Melody confronting her team, and Melody starting to write her autobiography for class. These events all make the story very engaging for the reader, and all join together to create an overall very interesting and exciting story.

The theme of " Out of my Mind" is don't judge a book by its cover. This is the theme of the book because people would assume that because Melody was physically disabled, she was mentally disabled as well. However, when she makes the quiz team she shows everyone how strong her mind is. People shouldn't judge people just by their physical appearance, and should choose to look farther and see how they are on the inside.

I really enjoyed the way that the author of this book wrote. The author used lots of descriptions throughout the book that really help readers see what its like to have a condition like Melodies. You can really see the embarrassment she feels like when kids make fun of her or leave her out. You can hear the snickers of kids bullying her such as Claire and Molly. You can feel the frustration that Melody has when she wants to speak so badly, but can't. I can really put myself into any of the characters shoes and see what they are feeling, thanks to the help of the excellent craft of the writer.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book "Out of my Mind". The book really opened my eyes to what it is like to live with a disability. Melody has to deal with so many challenges that the average person would never have to even think about. Eating, drinking, and moving are all things that we can do so easily, but Melody has to have help to do all of these things. This book makes me very feel grateful for how healthy I am. In the future I think I will pay more attention to what I complain and get upset about. Some kids aren't even able to do some of the things that I get experience.
