The minerals associated are serpentine , neptunite , natrolite , joaquimite , sanbornite , taramellite , albite , and fresnoite. The cleavage is absent , and the fracture is irregular but hardness is 6 - 6.5 . It's class is SIlicate and it's uses are minor ores of Zinc and as mineral specimens.  Hardystonite is well known to collectors of fluorescence minerals.  The fluoresce is a dark purple under short-wave ultraviolet light.  The fluorescent color is in striking contrast to the normal color of hardystonite.  Fluorescences occurs when the ultraviolet light imparts engery to some of the atoms in the mineral.  Hardystonite is usually a dull, unattractive white, but under short-wave UV light it impresses.
