Our guest speaker for the second seminar on 12/11/25 was Dr Cat Hinds, a Perinatal Psychiatrist at the Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Service (SPMHS) at the National Maternity Hospital. She is the Chair of the Perinatal Psychiatry Special Interest Group at the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland. Over the last 8 years, she has established and delivered new specialist perinatal mental health services in the UK and Ireland. She completed her medical training in London, and her specialist psychiatric training in New Zealand and Australia.

Dr Hinds spoke on Pre-Birth Planning Meetings in Perinatal Mental Health Services:

Pre-birth planning is an integral part of Perinatal Psychiatry. There is clear evidence that pregnancy and birth can trigger a relapse of severe mental illness. When a pregnant woman has an existing or previous diagnosis of severe mental illness, there is a valuable opportunity for perinatal mental health teams to engage in relapse prevention work. Pre-birth planning meetings are a way of creating and implementing a relapse prevention plan, and a chance for a woman and her partner to be involved in treatment decisions for the future in her pregnancy, birth and postpartum period.

Recording available here:

https://ucd-ie.zoom.us/rec/share/uRMmK2jh8QPXJFG4HHbAe2ABhpsriKUhzlpx_cUWIuEwgAXVL97BVnRqioE8zFSV.ls3kXzHBEjDtNPEJ?startTime=1762952770000

Passcode: !UCNsX9$
