Post 1: The Mediterranean World in 33 CE

1. Why did Rome control much of this area of the world? For how long did it do so?
Rome controlled much of the area of the world because the Romans had a large influence on the Jews. The Roman empire was the ruler as they defeated their enemy, the Carthaginians. The empire was defeated by the Roman Army and a Roman way of life was established in these defeated countries. In Rome’s early years, the state lived in terror of its more powerful neighbour, Carthage. The Carthaginians were great traders in the Mediterranean Sea and as the Romans wanted to expand into this trading zone, a clash was unavoidable. The Romans and the Carthaginians had their first war in the year of 264 BC. In a series of three wars, known as the Punic Wars, the Romans eventually defeated the Carthaginians. However, this took over 100 years to achieve and the wars finally ended in 146 BC. In the second Punic War, the Romans lost numerous battles. However, by 146 BC, the Romans were capable of capturing the city of Carthage in Northern Africa. Carthage was then burned to the ground and all signs of the city were destroyed by the Romans as a sign that the power of the Carthaginians had disappeared forever.

The Romans became the most powerful Mediterranean state due to the fact that they defeated the Carthaginians. As the Romans defeated the Carthaginians, it gave the Romans the opportunity they required to expand their power in the Mediterranean. The more wealthy and powerful the Romans became, the more likely they were to further expand their empire. Eventually, the fact that the Roman Empire was very large, was a major reason for why it collapsed and all of the power of the Romans was taken away. The Romans had much difficulty in maintaining power in their empire and supplying their army was a massive problem as their lines of communications lost. The power of the empire relied on the success of the Roman Army so when this success began to decrease, the empire started to collapse. The collapse of the Roman Empire occurred in 1453 AD. The main languages that were used were at this time was Latin, Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew. There were many ethnic and cultural groups living in these regions. These include, Hebrews, Galileans, Jews, Christians, Romans and Corinthians. There were many ways that people and goods were transported in the Mediterranean, 33ce. People and goods were transported by foot, boat or animal. The way that goods were transported, depended on the size and shape of it. The main regions and cities included Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.

Post 2: The Significance of the Conversion of Saul of Tarsus

Saul of Tarsus was brought up as a strict Jew and had a very good education, unlike many of the time. Saul persecuted Christians and wasn't a follower of Jesus. He hated and tortured Christians, making them suffer. Then one day, on his road to Damascus Jesus changed his heart as he was blinded by a bright light, which was Jesus. He was then blind for three days and soon realised that the way that he tortured and abused Christians wasn't right. He then converted and became a follower of Jesus. The way that the conversion of Saul of Tarsus was significant, was the fact that after he converted, he spread the world of Jesus. Making sure that everyone learnt the ways of him and the way that he lived his life. He changed his name to St Paul making a statement that his conversion changed him into a better person.

Paul's first missionary journey, which lasted from 46-48 AD was the shortest out of the three journeys that he took. He took this journey with Barnabas, who was an apostle at the time. Their journey first began in the city of Antioch of Syria where they were told by the Holy Spirit to go and spread the word of Jesus. Paul and Barnabas listened to Jesus's orders and travelled on a boat to the island of Cyprus where they arrived in the town of Salamis. After preaching the word of Jesus in Jewish temples, they travelled from town to town across the whole island, eventually reaching the city of Paphos. At Paphos, they came across a man who was being a false prophet and who was lying about Jesus. Due to this, Paul then punished the man to the local governor. After Paul punished the man, the governor learned about the truth of Jesus and converted to become a Christian. They left the island by boat to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards Asia Minor. They then decided that they would travel the rest of their journey on foot. All the places that Paul and Barnabas went, they shared the news of Jesus and established many churches. The last place that they travelled to was Lystra. This is where they performed a miracle where Paul healed a man who couldn't walk, making him able to walk again.

The purpose of Paul's letters was to teach and inform people about Christianity and Jesus. He spread the word of the Lord and taught people of the way that Jesus lived his life. Paul made sure that the way that people perceived Jesus was correct and in a positive way. He gave advice to Churches on maintaining unity and made sure that Christians knew that living a moral life was important. He also made sure that everyone knew to resist evil at all costs and to always do the right thing by Jesus. He lead people on the way to Christianity, praising Jesus and his way of life.

Post 5: Paul's Cultural Challenge

Paul's cultural challenge was when the conversion of Christians to Jews was established. Jewish Christian missionaries preached that Christians should follow Jewish law and be circumcised. When establishing the Church in Galatia, Paul made no demand for Christians to be circumcised as he believed that this wasn't necessary. This angered and shamed Paul and he wrote a letter to the Galatians making some of the following points. That the Jewish law was not important to becoming a Christian, what was important was believing in Jesus and following his example of kindness and compassion. The covenant has not been revoked but extended to Christians. The law is summed up in the single Commandment. “You shall love your neighbour as yourself”. The cultural challenge for Paul was the struggle of convincing the Jews that you don't have to be circumcised to convert and that all that mattered was that you believed in Jesus.

Philippians 2:1-5; 3:12-14; 4:6-9

2:1-5
This passage explains that you should not think about the needs and wants of yourself but the needs and wants of others. It also shows that you should be selfless and help others before you help yourself, essentially being like Jesus. This message is applicable for individuals or groups of people today. An example of this is the homeless. The homeless is an evident example because if you see someone in need, help them instead of dismissing them and helping yourself.

3:12-14
This passage explains that we must realise that God has a goal for our life and that we must work and press on towards our goal, that God has given us. This passage also explains that we should leave behind the past and look towards the future. This message is applicable for individuals or groups of people today because if you have a goal in life, you should work towards achieving it as this is what God would want. If you have experienced a hardship in your life, it is good to look towards the future as you don't know what it holds.

4:6-9
This passage explains that we should not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, through prayer, make sure to present these worries and requests to God. It also outlines that if anything is "excellent or praiseworthy", think about these things and work towards it. whatever you have learned or received or heard from God, put it into practice and use it in everyday life. Then the God of peace will be with you. This message is applicable for individuals or groups of people today. The way in which this message, applies to individuals or groups of people today is that if we get anxious or worried about something that is happening in our lives, we shouldn't worry about it and let God handle it. This message also applies to how we should use the things that we have learned in our lives to help us in our futures to grow as people.
