1. Fishing tackle could be very important to provide food in case they run out along their journey. The tackle can be used to gather fish which can provide a great source of food and protein for the explorers to survive.

2. Pocket pistols would be very important for protection for all of the explorers. If they were to come across any danger, the explorers would be able to shoot the danger away. Also, pocket pistols could be used to hunt for food if they get desperate enough.

3. Surveying and navigating equipment is necessary for further exploration. Things such as compasses, spy glasses, and much more are useful to create maps, discover new land or species, and much more.

4. Medicine could be very useful for any explorers who are sick or injured. Without medicine, many explorers could get so sick or hurt that they end up passing away. This wouldn’t be good because then there would not be enough explorers to travel any further.

5. Coats and clothing are necessary for survival and exploration because the explorers need to stay warm and have clean (enough) clothes. Without clothing (especially coats), the explorers could get hypothermia and die. Also, the explorers don’t know what kind of environment they may be walking into, so they will need spare clothes to adapt to their new surroundings.

6. Lead canisters for powder which will be melted into bullets are very useful for further exploration. The pistols (mentioned above) will need something to fuel themselves. Bullets will be able to do just that.

7. Canvases to create maps can be useful for exploration. Lewis and Clark (and their “crew”) were sent on this expedition to create new maps, and much more. Without these canvases, the maps will not be able to be created.

8. Gunpowder could be used for the pistols. Pistols are necessary to explore so you can be sure as an explorer that you will be safe. Without the gunpowder, the explorers would not be able to defend themselves with the pistol.

9. 32 gallons of wine may not seem like it would help, but it could be very useful. This is because wine is able to stay clean for a long time, which means a better source of drinking water.

10. Basic tools such as knives and scissors are useful for survival. For example, for those fish you fished out with that tackle, you need to take the scales off to get to the meat inside, and you would need a knife to do the job for that.

Captain- William Clark
William Clark would be a good member of the Corps of Discovery for many reasons. First of all, he was already a scientist who was very experienced with the classification of plants and animals. Also, he was a very educated man. He would easily be able to find the water route due to his education. William Clark is the obvious choice for the Pacific Northwest Expedition.
In 1804-06, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis led their expedition. This was to explore land through the Louisiana Purchase. Clark pursued his mission for three years, which proves that he was the best captain. Halfway through the mission, Lewis wanted to stop and head back. However, the amazing Captain William Clark kept them going. It is for that reason why Clark is the person that I would choose to take.

Private- William Bratton

Bratton is the best choice as a private. Standing 6 feet tall with previous military experience, William Bratton could withstand all of the harsh conditions and help protect the expedition. In 1806, Bratton got ill. Through this severe illness, Bratton survived, which proves of a hardy soldier who can do anything the captain would like. When there were shortages of food, Bratton would give some of his food to those who needed it most in his expedition. All of these things mentioned prove that William Bratton is the best choice as a private for this expedition.

The Elkhorn consists of four purple-pink petals that split into three different ends. The split part of the petal in the middle is the largest. Below the petals, there is a long stem, stretching about two feet on average. On that long stem, there are skinny leaves, almost shaped like pine tree leaves, which are a dark green. A few stems may branch out from Elkhorn specimens, and each stem will be just like the rest; dark green.

Native Americans could definitely use this plant for their benefit. The Elkhorn is a very good migraine reliever, can help intestinal pain, and in the past was used to help treat malaria. Due to all of these uses, the Elkhorn could definitely be considered as a useful plant for the Native Americans could have used, especially since lots of the illnesses they treat are quite serious.

Animal #1- Beavers

Beavers are among the largest living rodents in the world. They have thick fur, webbed feet and flattened, scale-covered tails. With powerful jaws and strong teeth, they fell trees in order to build homes and dams, often changing their environment in ways few other animals can. Their flattened, scale-covered tails are capable of being used for protection. When necessary, beavers will slap their tails to make such a loud noise that will scare away predators.

Native Americans would get a great benefit from beavers. Beavers were said by Lewis to be “excellent, particularly the tale and the liver.” This means that the Native Americans would be able to enjoy eating the flesh of the beaver, giving a great benefit of protein. Also, beavers have thick fur that could be used to create fur coats, or any other clothing item. Beavers are one of the most beneficial animals, especially to the Native Americans.

The bearberry is a trailing, evergreen shrub with paddle-shaped leaves on flexible branches. The thick, leathery leaves are rolled under at the edges. They are yellow-green in spring, dark-green in summer, and reddish-purple in the fall. Leaves remain on the bush year-round. There are also bright red berries, which are not toxic, but not quite flavorful either.

The Native Americans use this plant as a part of their culture. The bearberry plant can be smoked with tobacco, as the Native Americans like to do. Culture is a big part of how people, or in this case, Native Americans, go about their days. Without the bearberry, the culture of the Native Americans could have changed.

Lewis and Clark encountered the Nez Perce tribe on their journey. The Nez Perce tribe calls themselves Ni-mee-poo, which means “The people.” The Nez Perce Indians lived a nomadic lifestyle with teepees.

Typically when they moved to a new place, it was to follow the buffalo. The buffalo usually headed near rivers, therefore the Nez Perce tribe lived amongst rivers most of the time. This tribe was very peaceful and had a strong culture. The elders sang songs about prophecies, and much more.

When the tribe met Lewis and Clark, they took their expedition in and helped them out all winter long. Then, they set the expedition out with supplies to help them on the rest of their journey. Due to this tribe being so peaceful, there were usually no problems with other tribes, just allyships.
