Impact on Student Learning

It was incredible to watch the students interact. They are maturing and creating and being able to watch that first hand had an impact on me. I felt that I brought excitement to the students every time I stepped in. The love and hugs they would give me even after knowing me only a few days, made me feel a feeling that is indescribable. I know that Eccleston Elementary isn't in one of the best neighborhoods, and I had heard that a lot of students come from less fortunate homes. Being able to walk in and light up the students faces would make my day every time. I think when you interact with children who grew up with less than I did, you really understand why they are excited to see you. They liked to have someone around that they could speak to and joke with, and especially someone who they knew wouldn't yell or scold them. I was a listening ear and wanted the students to enjoy my time in the class.

Lessons Learned

Being at Eccleston Elementary I learned a lot about curriculum. I never knew how different curriculum worked and never witnessed how it was taught. It was a lesson I needed to learn if I was going to become a teacher because I could be at a school like Eccleston that is a Title I. It's important that I know how these curriculum's work. Another lesson I learned is that you can't let the students "walk all over you". I realized this pretty quickly, and was able to shift my demeanor so that the students would understand that just as their teacher, they must respect me the same exact way. It took a day for them to fully comprehend that but by the last day I was able to work with them with a dual understanding.

Challenges

I faced many challenges while I was at Eccleston. I had never been to a Title I school before. Title I schools "receive funding that provides a high-quality curriculum and instruction. They support a learning environment that enables the students to meet Florida's rigorous academic achievement standards." It was different to see the way that the subjects were taught. They had "centers" where they would work in groups and do their work. Coming from a private and charter school, I never had a curriculum that seemed that strict. My teacher was given her packets, tests, assignments, etc, all from the school board. It was definitely a challenge for me to understand how exactly the students were understanding the material when it seemed as though there wasn't much actually student-teacher communication. It was also a challenge to be in a community that I didn't understand and know. Growing up in the suburbs you never really understood how other people may live. Being with these kids for these 20 hours was a challenge, because I know my private school peers would never act the ways they were. My first day at Eccleston, there were students trying to run away and teachers chasing after them. It was eye opening to witness such things.

In this Padlet, I will be talking about the challenges, lessons I've learned, and my impact on student learning that have all come from this service learning project. It was an amazing experience to share with the third graders from Eccleston Elementary. They taught me and challenged me everyday that I volunteered, and showed me how teaching will be as career.
