My first paper focused on Johnson's theory of "Flashing Arrows" as narrative signposts pointing out key moments or events to viewers. As far as Inception goes, I'm going to analyze the first 127 seconds of the film (when Cobb wakes up on the beach). It contains no "flashing arrows" whatsoever. I'm going to analyze all the key details that are shown there (the totem, the kick, important lines, Cobb's kids, Cobb and Saito) that are important for us to know for understanding the film. Yet, we are give NO CLUES as to the importance of any of it. The viewer is expected to keep all that in their mind as they watch the rest of the film.

My second paper (which I will start today - Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy) will focus on Johnson's idea of "multiple plot threads." By this he means more films today have not just one plot running through them but several. This is certainly true for Inception. I'm going to focus on two different theories (1. Cobb completes the mission and can return home to his kids and the top falls over. 2. When Mal jumped she really woke up, but Cobb is still dreaming and the top never topples over at the end.). I believe each of these theories can be argued validly, which is what I will do in my paper.

Inception within inception. I'll use Johnson's theory of multiple plot threads. I'll explain how Cobb is still dreaming and how while he and his team (who are projections of his subconscious) are planting an idea in Fischer's mind, Ariadne is planting the idea in Cobb's mind that Mal's death wasn't his fault and he shouldn't feel guilty, which makes him accept a dream as his reality.

The Johnson's Idea that I will be focusing on in my paper is that some narratives make you make sense of the film. I will talk about how the ending is totally up to what you believe in and the steps there are in the movie that lead up to what I think of the movie. I will also tell my opinion about why I think that.

I think the ending is exactly how the director put it, you can interpret it whichever way you want. So as of right now I'll be trying to prove the happy ending who wants to talk about some depressing story about the man actually never getting to see his kids. I'll be using the totems and levels to prove the side I argue for.

I'll look at the multiple times throughout the film that hint at the fact that Cobb is still in a dream. I'll use Johnson's bit about the viewer "filling in" what is left out or ambiguous on purpose.
Or I might look at totems and how the whole idea of Cobb's totem is invalid if he is in his own dream. His subconscious knows the weight of the totem so he can choose to make it fall over, even if he is not in reality.
