He wishes to do advanced things on Khan with math and science and to discuss higher level thesis-based social studies.
I have not allowed these things until he fills his gaps (he started at a 3rd grade math level, and is at about a 4th - 5th grade writing level in terms of structure and grammar).

He is approaching 8th grade level in math while still needing to fill gaps.  His writing is improving but still has a long way to go.

I am using these advanced things as a carrot to get him to fill those gaps.
