I was particularly inspired by specific lines of dialogue and the repetitiveness of the opening 5 minutes or so of the film. I felt the lines 'You know nothing of Hiroshima', 'I wish you had died in Nevers', and the moment where our characters are finally named (Hiroshima and Nevers).

I included the line 'You know nothing of Hiroshima' multiple times to reflect the opening of the film, and how I feel like the line has two meanings. One meaning being that Nevers was not there, so she can't possibly know of the true horrors of the bomb. The other meaning being that she never learns much of her lover, Hiroshima, apart from his job and that he has a wife. She knows nothing of the horrific events of Hiroshima, but she also knows nothing of her lover yet he knows so much about her.

I wanted to also include the idea that Nevers is forever grieving her dead lover from the war, and while watching the film I felt her narration was aimed at the dead soldier- hence why in my piece she is specifically talking to her past love.

I really enjoyed the film and writing this piece, and I'm looking forward to hearing what you all think!

There is an extreme juxtaposition between past, present and future that is woven into the novels narrative structure blurring the boundaries of memory and reality. In the opening of the text, we get shifting characters perspectives as they reflect on their past experiences at the drawing room window with an example being Mrs. Ramsey’s thoughts shifting from the present moment to recollections of childhood summers at the lighthouse. There is no linear route to these thoughts, they occur more naturally, they cut into the present moments, and this allows for Woolf to highlight how the present moment, our current everyday life, is connected with our memories as they shape our perceptions of our reality.

This novel does not follow a traditional plot structure furthering the representation of the nature of memory and perception. Instead of a linear plot structure we instead have a series of vignettes, each one allowing us to catch a glimpse of the character’s inner lives. This allows the idea of subjective time to come more to the forefront as we have to battle to fit the characters past and present together.

Overall, To The Lighthouse invites us to reconsider what counts as everyday life through the exploration of the passage of time and how our memories and past experiences do, in fact, have a direct correlation with our present experience.

Millions were affected by the tragedy in such a short time and yet, amidst this devastation, people stood together such as the “liquidators” who risked their lives to contain the radiation or the communities that rallied together to support one another in the aftermath. Chernobyl Prayer bears witness to the power that this unity held in the face of complete disaster and the destruction that came in its aftermath.

We see from the accounts in the novel how people from all walks of life banded together in order to offer aid or some form of comfort to those in need. Neighbours opened their homes to those fleeing, volunteers worked to provide medical care and entire communities came together in order to rebuild and try and gain a sense of normalcy. These acts of solidarity not only were essential to the healing of those in need but also an example of strength and resilience in the face of overwhelming calamity.

The novel also highlights the interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of collective action in addressing global challenges. The Chernobyl disaster transcended just the city itself, leaving a lasting impact on communities far beyond the Soviet Union. In documenting the survivors’ stories from all walks of life, Alexievich reminds us of our shared humanity and how imperative it is to stand together in times of crisis.

To conclude,Chernobyl Prayerserves as a reminder of the power of solidarity in the face of immense disaster. Svetlana Alexievich captures the resilience, compassion and strength that emerges when individuals come together to support one another, through the voices of those impacted by the Chernobyl disaster. In the increasingly interconnected age live in today, these lessons of solidarity are more relevant than ever, reminding us of the importance of standing united in the face of shared challenges

I really enjoyed this film and the story within it, I thought it was nice to see something that felt so real but also theatrical at the same time.
