I would start by following my "chain of command" and initiate vertical communication to the person in charge of my department. This will help avoid confusion and will also explain the details to the person who will take action with this issue. I believe it is my responsibility to report my concern to higher officials to express the importance of communication.

Before getting administration involved I will first say it's not right to take what does not belong to us, and if you took something from my desk I want it put back in the next few minutes. Then I will step outside for 3 minutes and If nobody put it back then I would say okay I will talk to each and every one of you to see who took it and if nobody turned it in then I will have to get the principal involved along with security and their parents. If nothing was turned in before the end of the day then I would let the principal know, and file a police report if needed.

If this would ever be the case, I would more than likely tale to my students first and have them discuss the situation as well. An action like that is obviously incorrect and should be taken care of as soon as possible, but aside from that, one has to acknowlegde that it could have been anyone in the school not necessarily the students. If anything, after have a discussion with the class, one as a teacher knows how each student is and will automatically know by non-verbal communication who the theif might be. If the money is not yet found or brought in, I will then proceed to taking it in to the administration and ask for a meeting to be held to discuss the situation. Before getting the police involved, I would want to talk to the parents and discuss the situation with them as well, but if nothing happens then I'd have to file a report and have the police to their job. After the student is found (if it were to be a student), I'd then proceed tot talking to them personally and guide him and advise him/her about the action they took, why they did it, and how it could be fixed. A child was not born a thief, so it is up to the teacher to teach that as well.

As the principal gets to the classroom, I would then talk to the students and ask who took it and let's see if they tell me the truth in front of their principal. If its not the students, then it could be anyone else in the school, and whoever it was, I would like to set a meeting with the student's parents and the student along with the principal and I. They need to know that its incorrect to take money that does not belong to them. Their punishment may be getting suspended, expelled or arrested.

I would want for the money to be returned first of all, and in order for this to happen I would have to identify the guilty person or student. Best thing to do would be to ask my entire class for the missing money, and give a firm lecture on how it is wrong to take what is not theirs and that stealing comes with consequences. Then I would ask : "who ever took the money, could you please return it?" I would give them the opportunity to return it before directing this issue with the principal. If the money doesn't get returned, and if I find out who took the money, I would set a meeting with student, parent and principal. I would proceed to talk to the student, let him/her know that I am aware that he/she took it and I expect for it to get returned. I would ask for an apology from student and for the parent to talk to student at home of what he/she did was wrong.

I would lecture on this topic like show them videos, read them books, etc. so they can see that it is not right to get things that are not yours. Afterwards, I would give them a second chance to see if it was any of the students. When it's time for the children to go home, I would mention something breifly regarding the situation to the parents so they can help me search their children or belongings, to make sure they didn't take anything. If there are cameras in the classrooms of course I would check on those first, otherwise if the money isn't found take the situation to the principal for further investigation.

I will look into anyone that came into contact that might have been able to take the money. Have them look at the cameras and interview each person who seemed suspicious.

First of all I would check one more time, just to make sure. I would retrace my steps, to see if I might have misplaced it. If at this point, I am certain the money is missing, I would report it to the person in charge of the fundraiser, then to the school officials until it got to the principal. It would be important and necessary to ask students if anybody saw anything, and ask if anybody took it, this would be the time to return it, or they might get in serious trouble. I would also ask for the school officials to check cameras if available to see who entered the classroom when I was not there. Parents should also be informed of the incident, because students eventually have to go home, and parents know them better that the teachers. Teachers and the rest of the personnel should also be informed in case anyone took it, let them know there will be investigation. After all this is done, and the money is not found, then I would let the principal decide if it is proper to involve police, and make a report.
