‘Staring into a Scottish landscape, I have often asked myself why – in spite of all appearances – bracken, rocks, man and sea are at some level one.’ This quote was written by Neal Ascherson. Indeed Scotland is a country with extremely beautiful landscapes every aspect of the cities down to the mountains is absolutely perfect. Through Britain For Learners of English subject, I was attracted to this beautiful country. I feel the beauty of this country through the scenery of mountains, plateaus, rivers and lakes. Moreover, the people here and the cultural values that this country has kept through many years of history. There are two things that made me interested in Scotland such as the culture, and the landscapes.

Talking about the culture of Scotland, I would like to mention the origin of the culture here, traditional costumes, musical instruments, sports and the people who have many outstanding contributions to the arts and sciences over the countries. Firstly, Scotland's culture has long been divided into highland culture and lowland culture, to be more specific historic cultural differences long divided Celtic Scots of the Highlands and Anglo-Saxons of the Lowlands. Traditionally, the clan, a grouping of an entire family with one patriarchal chief, or laird, was central to Highland culture. Clans were also important as fighting units, and they played an important role in rebellions against the British government. However, the depopulation of the Highlands, which has occurred since the 18th century, fatally weakened the clan structure. Today, the clan in Scotland exists mainly as a cultural ideal rather than as a practical form of social organization. Secondly, the kilt, a skirt with a tartan pattern worn by men, is a well-known symbol of Scottishness. Thirdly, Scotland has a rich musical heritage. I am a person who loves music and learns about music, especially ethnic musical instruments, so when I was in the process of learning about Scotland I realized that this is a country rich in music and has many traditional instruments. . This also makes me feel closer to this country. The traditional instruments of Scotland include the fiddle, clarsach (the Celtic harp), and bagpipes, an ancient instrument that was probably brought to Scotland by Romans. Every August, the city of Glasgow, Scotland, hosts the World Pipe Band Championships. The prestigious competition, sponsored by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association, draws thousands of pipers and drummers from bagpipe bands around the world. Besides music, sports also have an important place in Scottish life. The most popular sports in Scotland are soccer and rugby. Professional clubs draw a wide following, and many Scots play on amateur teams. Sports of Scottish origin, including curling and golf, also remain popular. A beautiful and varied natural environment supports many forms of outdoor recreation, including hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, sailing, and skiing. Indoor sports, such as billiards, darts, and bowling, also attract many enthusiasts. In addition, through Britain For Learners of English subject, I realize that there are many famous people from Scotland and they are very talented people who have made their country proud. They contribute many values to the country in particular and the world in general. Well-known Scottish painters include the portraitists Allan Ramsey. Leading Scottish writers include the poets Robert Burns, and Hugh MacDiarmid. In the field of philosophy, Scotland has produced numerous influential thinkers, the moral philosopher and historian David Hume, and the renowned economist Adam Smith. Among the great Scottish scientists are James Watt, who greatly improved the steam engine, Sir William Ramsay, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist, and so on.

The thing I love the most about Scotland is its landscapes. Scotland can be divided into three areas. The Southern Uplands are the fertile plains and hills bordering England. The Central Lowlands run from Edinburgh to Glasgow and contain the industrial towns and most of the population. The Highlands are mountain ranges rising to their heights at Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. Scotland and its offshore Islands comprise the northernmost part of the United Kingdom. The Scottish mainland, which occupies roughly the northern third of the island of Great Britain, is bothered on three sides by seas. Maybe it's because the three sides are bordered by the sea. So that’s why Scotland has an irregular and deeply indented crossline. The rugged western coast, in particular, is pierced by numerous inlets from the sea. Most of these inlets are narrow submerged valleys with deep sides, known as sea lochs or what we called Loch Ness. The larger and broader inlets are called the firths such as the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth. The main natural harbor is located in the Firth of Clyde. I believe that Scotland is the oldest country in the world. Because the hills of the northwest and the Hebridean islands are more than 2,700 million years old. We can walk on some of the oldest rocks in the world there. People first lived there 9,000 years ago. At Skara Brae on the Orkney Islands, in the far north of Scotland, we can see the houses of early people from about five thousand years ago. The houses at Knap of Howar, also on the Orkneys, are the oldest in Europe. The Romans went to Scotland, but they did not stay there for long. Between AD 122 and 128, they built Hadrian’s Wall. It was 117 km long and went from sea to sea across the most northern part of England. The Romans stayed in England for nearly three hundred years until about AD 400, and then they left and went back to Rome. Today we can visit Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England and walk along parts of it. This beautiful country has a place you can't miss it's the Isle of Skye. I believe that this place was my best spot in Scotland, garnering enthusiasm for its "extensive landscape and wilderness" as well as for its outrageous "beautiful and wild". In addition, our experts have selected the Isle of Skye as one of the best places on Earth in 2022. It's also an enchanted location, as seen by the natural setting of the Fairy Glen, which has green valleys, small mountains, and bubbling brooks, as well as the Fairy Pools. These are one of the greatest spots in Britain for wild swimming.

To sum up, this is a country rich in culture and rich in natural scenery. With the main terrain is hills, this county has been naturally blessed with wonderful landscape and has had very beautiful tourist destinations with wild features. Scottish culture, in my opinion, is incredibly rich. with incredible traditional musical instruments.
