According to him, he is working as a security guard before. He is happy and contented with his work until his son get sick and he needed money for his son's medication. One day, he saw that a bunch of money fell from the bag of a Chinese guy and he picked it up. His actions was seen from a CCTV camera and because of what he have done, he was arrested by the legal authority. 

At first, he keeps on justifying that his actions was not a personal decision but was induced by his situation during that time. He said that he will not do it if he doesn't need money. But among those stories, one of the female PDLs in Mandaluyong City Jail gave a memorable one. She blatantly shared that it was her third time in prison. Although her brother is a priest and most of her relatives are devoted religiously, she still commits the same mistakes all over again. She admitted that she’s indeed ashamed of it, especially to her brother. She also said that if given a chance of another opportunity of liberty, she will used it to make amends to her family and start a new life.

While I was staring at her eyes while she was sharing, I can see the intensity and sincerity to change. I’m indeed happy to know that she finally decided a better life for her. But upon contemplating a lot and considering her story, her life has always been better. To think that her life is surrounded by faith and harmony which is something that not all of us enjoy is indeed a great factor to consider. But just like time and weather, they can be deciphered but can’t stopped. Life is indeed confusing, most of the times. But one thing is certain, we all have to push through.

The simple sharing of thoughts, messages and stories allows PDLs to be opened and vulnerable in front of their co-PDLs. This creates a safe space where feelings and emotions are valid. Despite the fact that they did unlawful actions, they are still humans who learned how to repent and move forward to accept that these things are already done. They learned to accept what they have done, who they are, and what they dream. They also learned to accept their co-PDLs despite differences. Thus, they built a family where love and care conquer all.

She has white hair with an age range from 50-60 years old. I was fascinated by the way she listened carefully to our values formation. She once shared that one of her crimes is estafa. She wanted to ask for her family's forgiveness for the crime she committed. You can see the sincerity and repentance in her eyes. During the lecture about the family, I saw her wiping tears after watching the short clip about Disney's Coco. Today, I am hoping that all values and principles she learned will contribute to her overall wellbeing and life after jail.

  • Communication Skills - this has become essential throughout our SSP. We were able to execute our tasks well because of good communication especially that we are working as a team. Asking and looking for each other, both in livelihood team and values formation, make things easier. This skills will definitely help me when I started working since I will also be dealing with people.
  • Time Management - we have individual and group tasks which sometimes have the same deadline. Having a good time management will be a big help. I usually write "to-do" lists to help me keep track of my finished and pending works. This help me not only in our SSP but also at home and school. And I know this will also be very helpful when I work. 
  • Listening - part of having a good teamwork is listening. We make sure to have our weekly meeting every Monday to share what happened to us for that week. Listening to their stories allows me to better comprehend their duties and challenges. In addition, I had the opportunity to meet and hear from our PDLs. I understand them more now that I've heard them. This SSP isn't only about us talking and giving lectures; it's also about giving ourselves time to listen to one another, because listening is an important component of learning.
