As someone who often struggles with creativity and ideas, this course looks like it's going to be a great way to get those juices flowing. I am excited about the prospect of creating a promo video, although coming up with ideas and executing them well is rather daunting. I'm currently wrestling with a few different angles.
A promo for a real organisation
A promo for one of my own creative works
A commercial for a fake product or service
A commercial for a terrible fake product or service.

Had a lot of fun coming up with my 80 ideas, and I ran out of serious ideas pretty quickly. Toward the end it just became a game of coming up with the most ridiculous fake products I could, and I think there are a lot there that could make for funny and creative advertisements. I started out with useful products and toward the end gravitated more towards ironic/unhelpful inventions.

After the lecture though, I felt very confident. It was all quite easy to understand and I've got all the terminology noted down to refer to. The tutorial was a good opportunity to put this into practice, and I didn't have too much trouble getting started on my website.

This week we worked on creating mind maps to flesh out our idea, and more specifically the message we want to send with our advertisement. This proved to be helpful because, while I did have an idea, it was really not developed at all. Forcing myself to to branch out and talk about every single aspect of the product/message has definitely given me some ideas for what direction to take my advertisement. Considering I'm yet to do much research, this will help to give me some specific avenues to look down.

It outlines a study that was undertaken using several millennial participants, to test the effects of awe and affection in viral video ads. The study found that ads that provoke these emotions give people a cognitive response, making them feel altruistic. This results in a higher likelihood of sharing the video. The results may differ between advertising products and causes though. Because of the nature of the study, it was not easy to gauge how likely participants are to buy the product based on the emotion in the ad.

This source will be useful for my promo because it gives me a lot to think about in terms of tone. Because I am advertising a product, I will need to do some more thinking about branding. Still, being a 30 second video advertisement a lot of the rules discussed in this source apply, and by invoking positive emotions in the viewer I will be able to give them a better experience, and the cognitive reaction of spreading the advertisement around, which will in turn grow the product.

Revista Brasileira de Marketing, vol. 15, no. 4, pp. 448–458.

The rise of new technologies means we are living in a completely different era for advertising than we did ten years ago. Because of the wide array of content, consumers have more power than ever to pick and choose what they are seeing. Because of these, marketers need to be more strategic than ever to ensure their content is seen by as many people as possible. This source details a study that was undertaken to find out what certain characteristics distinguish a successful ad from an unsuccessful ad. The key findings stated that engagement and surprise were the two things most likely to make a video to go viral.

This source is helpful because it details the current media landscape and how advertising is received today.

This week we are focusing on colour, branding and target audiences. I have decided to create three audience profiles to nail down the type of person I want to target with my ad.

Consumer #1:
Name: Jimmy
Age: 16
Occupation: High School Student
Interests: Geek culture, superhero movies. Hanging out with friends, watching Netflix.
Use of Product: In a world full of trolls who want to ruin other people's fun, Jimmy is always at risk of getting his favourite movies ruined for him.

Consumer #2:
Name: Frank
Age: 31
Occupation: Film/TV Critic
Interests: Writing, analysing media content, sports.
Use of Product: Constantly surrounded by journalists who see every film early, Frank needs to avoid plot details to keep his reviews as objective as possible, and his viewing experience pure.

Consumer #3:
Name: Chuck
Occupation: University Student
Interests: Seeing movies, drawing, listening to music, studying.
Use of Product: Uni lecturers often talk about media content at will with little regard for spoiler details for things that not everyone may have seen. As an avid film fan this product will help Chuck in those unavoidable situations.

All of the research that I have done for this promo have led me to really think about the inherent ridiculousness of my idea. This has made me consider the tone and emotion that I will use. For the ad to work, I want to incorporate an ironic and humorous tone. To have an over-dramatic nature that somewhat winks at the camera. I believe that playing it straight will result in a lame advertisement for a very niche product. Because this is a product specifically geared toward pop culture fans, I will need to use a style that will specifically resonate with this group.

Because I am inventing a rather silly and niche product, for inspiration I decided to look for tech-based advertisements that featured at least one or more element of what I'm trying to achieve. The first ad captures the humorous, tongue-in-cheek nature that I'd like to emulate. It is very meta about what it is advertising, and feels very cinematic and over-dramatic which is what I want to do with my promo. The second ad features a very basic narrative, and uses a similar style of exposition to what I have planned, in which one character describes the product to another character in need. It also has a sense of humour and elements of absurdity. The third advertisement is different in tone than the others, but it captures something that I want to do with the story. The ad shows how their product (app) improves people's lives, which is a positive emotion that I want to invoke with my product. The fact that I am considering giving my product a companion phone app is the reason I searched for an ad of this kind.
In terms of differentiating mine from what I've seen before, I think the absurdity of my product will play a hand in that. Stylistically I want the ad to feel cinematic, with lots of dramatic flourishes and use of colour.

The ad begins with three friends chatting, when one loudly says "HEY". He mentions the new 'Solar Altercations' movie, and proceeds to spoil the death of a major character. The main character of our ad, lets call him Bill, has obviously not seen it yet and recoils in horror, dramatically slumping to the ground in pain as his friends talk on. Suddenly, a man dressed in pure blue colours appears, putting his hand on Bill's shoulder. The man tells Bill that he needs the Spoiler-Avoider, a new ear-worn device that can block outside noise at the push of a button. The next day Bill returns to his friends, now dressed in blue and kitted out with a new Spoiler-Avoider. His friend goes to bring up the new 'The Slow & The Calm' movie, but Bill hits a button and drowns his friends out, much to their dismay. The ad ends with an overjoyed Bill sitting in a movie theatre enjoying the new 'Slow & The Calm' film. Fade out onto the Spoiler-Avoider logo, a website and the tagline "Watch movies the way you deserve".

This treatment is a rough outline of what I want to do, and logistics will dictate how much of it is used in the advertisement. Pacing and keeping the runtime short is going to be a challenge. The character names, film titles, tagline and locations are also placeholders at this point, depending on what else I come up with and what locations are available for me to film at.
