Carol Ann Duffy was born December 23, 1955. Duffy grew up in Glasgow, Scotland and later moved to England. She had four younger brothers and her father worked as a fitter with English Electric. Duffy began publishing her writing at the young age of fourteen. In 1977 she went to Liverpool University and graduated with a degree in philosophy.

After university, Duffy worked as a writer for television shows. She then continued writing at East End schools of London for two years. Duffy was the first female Poet Laureate of Great Britain. She is one of the most know poets. Some of her most known works are Rature, Seling Manhattan, and Mean Time. Duffy was an editor for the poetry magazine Ambit, and continued at this job for many years. She then became the Creative Director of the Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Duffy has written many plays and childrenbooks that have been harshly reviewed, like most pieces of work. Despite that harsh reviews Duffy has received, she has continued writing and received numerous awards. Some of these awards include the Eric Gregory Award in 1984, the CHolmondeley Award in 1992, Dylan Thomas Award in 1989, and the Lannan Literary Award. Duffy was considered for other positions such as poetry laureate. Britannica writes, "In 1999 British media claimed that Duffy had been considered for the position of poet laureate but that Prime Minister Tony Blair feared her homosexuality would not be well received by “middle England”; "(Britannica). This shows how Duffy was very vocal about what she believed in and this affected some opportunities for her.

One of Duffy's main themes is feminism. In the article "Carol Ann Duffy", by the poetry foundation, we are able to see this when the author writes, "Duffy’s poetry has always been strong and feminist. This position is especially well captured in her first collection" (Poetry Foundation). She expresses this idea in many of her works, specificlly in her poem "Standing Female Nude".
