Pressing is an essential process in the construction of a garment. The purpose of pressing is to flatten out any undesirable creases or to prepare the garment for further sewing. The main elements of the pressing process are heat, pressure, and moisture which deform fibres, yarns and fabrics to accomplish the required effect.

1. What is inlay and why is used?
The inlay is an additional piece of cloth within the garment’s seam which allows for greater freedom for readjustments between fittings. It’s prevalence in bespoke clothing is necessary to ensure the garments longevity can be maintained for as long as possible. Not having an inlay can make it very difficult to adjust a garment post fitting.

2. How and where gimp thread is used on a garment?

Gimp is a narrow ornamental trim used in sewing or embroidery. It is made of silk, wool, or cotton and is often stiffened with metallic wire or coarse cord running through it. A point presser makes this job possible.

5. Name the pre-waxed hand sewing thread used by tailors?

Silk skeins are a pre-waxed thread used for hand sewing. Pre-waxed thread is used in tailoring so that the threads don’t get knotted and can move through the fabric easily. Pre-waxed threads also saves time, as they do not need to be waxed by hand any longer before sewing.

6. It is used to wax thread to make them stronger, smoother, and keep them from getting knotted and tangled.

7. What size needle do you use to perform a felling stitch and where it is used on a garment?

Size 7 needle is used when sewing a felling stitch. Felling is used to sew in the lining of a garment. The folded edge of the lining is attached to the hem or facing of the garment.

8. How do you maintain proper posture?

Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright while sitting or standing. To keep proper posture while sitting down the back should be straight and shoulders back. Knees should be bent at a right angle and feet flat on the floor.

9. List key health and safety issues likely to arise in making your pocket.

Proper posture should be used when cutting and sewing. Care should be taken while sewing and using the machines to avoid injury. Long hair should be tired back and large earrings should be removed. Heels should not be worn while using the sewing machine. Caution should be taken while using the iron as it is hot and can result in injury.
