Front Cover

The masthead on this front cover blends in well with the colour scheme, therefore you do not really notice it upon looking at the cover. The colour is quite basic, and does not stand out on the page, although this benefits the page, as there is a lot going on. However, it can be said that it is in really bold text that takes up the full horizontal length of the cover. The font is very uniform and powerful, which could connote the intended audience, as powerful women. The masthead is placed behind the model, this is because it allows the audience to see the main image clearly, without any interruption from the masthead.

Like previously said, the colour scheme is very neutral, even though it follows the theme of blue. I think this main colour was used as it connotes peace and trust, which may be something the model on the front cover is trying to promote, considering she has been in a lot of celeb drama in the past. The scheme also works really well with her clothing colour, and white portrays innocence, which follows the peaceful theme.

The main image is of celebrity personality Kim Kardashian. This is excellent way to promote and her and get sales for the magazine. Due to the fact that Kim is massively popular, and millions of people will go out and buy this issue, if they have never read Cosmopolitan before. They have used a medium shot of her, this then shows off her clothing, and using the Laura Mulvey theory on how this attracts the male gaze, due to her wearing quite revealing clothing that shows off her breasts. Her makeup however is not glamorous, and is quite natural and fits with the theme.

The main cover line is 'Kim Speaks!', which is in large black typography. It is in the same font as the masthead, which follows the same house theme through out the page, and also adds professionalism. By using a exclamation marks, makes the reader think that what Kim has to say is really important, and gossip they cannot miss out on. The graphic designer has also added a small sub- heading jigsawed into the cover line, this gives more detail of the article, and allows the reader to decide if it is worth buying the magazine.

The other cover lines are in the same font, but are different sizes and colours. This creates diversity throughout the page, and attracts the reader to different things. This magazine uses quite old headings on the Left Third, which is the part of the magazine the viewers see's on a shop shelf. They have used words like 'Smart Ass' and 'Exposed' to pull in the audience, and make them wonder 'what is exposed? What is rude?' etc. This can also benefit Cosmopolitan, because if a viewer isn't attracted to one cover line, it offers them choice of others they may be interested in.

There isn't a barcode on the cover but it is suppose to be at the bottom on the left. This allows the shop owner to scan the magazine and sell to a customer, the price will show and let the owner know how many are left in his stock. The issue month is under the masthead, and is in white, although it is really small, it is noticeable to people that are keen on reading ever issue. The price is also in a puff, and is bold in a coral colour. This feature isn't seen on many upper class international magazines, however is a good way to promote how cheap the magazine actually is.

The masthead does not appear on this contents page, however does provide their website. The main thing that does catch your eye on this page is the issue date. It is two different colours, which adds a sense of individuality and stands out from the black background.

The layout on this contents page is set out very methodically, and in a specific layout. For example, they have lists of articles and their page numbers, and the images in selected places. I think this allows the reader to quickly scan over the page easily. Furthermore, the images used are all in conjunction with what articles are in the magazine. They have also included the page numbers, so it if something interests them (image wise), then the reader can easily locate what page it is on. At the bottom of the page, they have used a blue box, to include a brief summary of the items on the front cover. This is a good feature to include on the contents page, as if someone was attracted to something on the front cover then they have the ability to go out and get what they like, due to this box telling them where to find it. Using the blue again, follows with the house theme and makes it stand out on the page amongst the other writing.

The font throughout this page varies quite differently. They have used bold typography for the heading and then a really elegant curly type for the sub- headings. This was done so they stand out from the other writing on the page. They have also used these headings (such as 'Freebies' and 'Life Stylist'), so they can categorize the articles, and create an easy system for the readers to find a type of page they are looking for.

The page is a mix of being image and text led. There are four main images of celebrities/ artists, and other small photos of objects that are promoted in the magazine. This is a really beneficial way of showing what trends are taking place inside the magazine, and again lets the viewer choose where they want to read first.

The text is not that clear enough to see if there is any linguistic features, but I am presuming there will be rhetorical questions, alliteration and assonance.

Double Page Spread

The colour scheme on this double page spread is really bright and colourful. This may be done to connect the artist being presented, and show off her bubbly and confident personality. The use of coral pink, dark purple and black really compliments off one another, and creates and effective and aesthetically pleasing page to read.

The layout on this double page spread is quite different. More than half of the page is taken up by the image and masthead, which leaves 2 columns for the article text. This is a really effective way of designing a spread as it is fun to see and a bit different than regular image and text led pages.

The image is a mid shot of the singer and actress Miley Cyrus. She was once known for being Hannah Montana, therefore I think this is what the girly look is inspired by. Although she is standing in a sexual pose with her stomach out, this may be to rebel from the Disney image she once had.Her makeup and hair is very natural, with a noticeable lip gloss shine on her lips, which I think suits the subtle colour scheme.

Furthermore, the font they have used is different in different parts of the spread. For example, the singers name Miley, is positioned vertically down her body and is in a serif font, which is relaxed and simple, this could connote the models attitude now.The word 'unleashed' is then in a curly, handwritten type font, which could suggest the girl she is now coming/ already is.
