I usually start by giving a task, group work or a Desmos activity in order to engage them.

As teachers we are moderators in social science classes, in zoom we are also moderating the discussion, posing questions and asking comments from each student. Opening chat is also very useful for class discussion. We are using jamboard, padlet, etc. for sharing ideas during the discussion.
