The mentoring program should create a database where veteran teachers and mentors could share resources with novice teachers. The librarians in various schools should be involved in locating and sharing resources with mentors and mentees.

I have been involved in the mentorship program at Essex County Schools of Technology. Both novice and licensed teachers have received essential support from this program. It has reversed the turnover rate of teachers in district.

Regular consultation between mentors and mentees.

It's important to remember the mentor/mentee relationship is a learning experience for both participants. Although the mentee may be a new teacher, they bring their individual life experiences which can aid in the teaching/learning process.

It's imperative that mentees understand that what may work with one group of students, may not fair so well with another. With that said, what may work for one mentee, may not work for another. Veteran teachers should consider the temperament/personality of the novice teacher when offering advice/recommendations.

Although the endless lists of best practices and studies are valuable, teaching is not a science. It's an art. When entering the classroom environment, novice teachers should allow themselves some grace. It may take time to truly get to know various groups of students and what strategies work best.

As a teacher mentor, I think it's important to refrain from imposing their personal perspective. Allow the mentee to frame their own experiences and come to their own conclusions, then support them as needed.

Don't be afraid to try something new.
