At Alicante Elementary, we have implemented PBIS and the entire school, staff, students, and parents follow the quote: Endless PAWS-ibilities! Each letter represents something. P- Personal Best, A- Act Responsible, W- Work and Play Safely, and S- Show Respect. All these things are implemented in every area in the school. Students receive rewards for showing PBIS behaviors and have support by School Social Workers whenever needed. My 6th grade class is currently going through sessions with the coordinator on bullying. It has really made a transformation in their attitudes and treatment of others. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning all teachers implement lessons on PBIS.

Our school principal has a heart of gold and it is amazing to be working under her. She has brilliant ideas and so much knowledge on common core, as well as support for all students, parents, and staff. She definitely has the attitude of all students are our students because we are a family and a team, and makes sure to implement that with the staff. We need to care about all our students and need to make sure we are all doing our part equally for the students, so that they are receiving the best in any class they may be in.

I am not familiar with RCELD so I am assuming we currently do not have anything in place. We do have a Reading Lab and some of our students are pulled out of class to go to the lab for about 40 minutes a day; usually during ELA time. I have heard that there are about 7-11 students in the lab at a time which is technically not a great resource for helping our students succeed and improve their reading level. This is definitely something that needs to be addressed and improved.

This is a continuous issue. We usually receive a pacing calendar on the first day of school, which is completely matching the textbook, not any essential standards. We then backwards plan two months into the school year for the first Benchmark, and we must prepare students for a month prior to testing. There is no problem solving approach set in place to help teachers and our students succeed. Everything seems so unorganized and last minute, and we are rushing to prepare our students. Luckily, with our new school principal, we are already preparing the pacing calendar for our own school based on the essential standards and benchmarks. That way as teacher we are prepared before school starts next year, and we will prepare our students to succeed.
