As he enters, he observes his surroundings and is stunned at how familiar it was while at the same time it was not. While walking through the mansion he was describing the design from the carving on the ceiling to even the floor. Arriving at which the master stayed he then takes note of the figurative gloom that hung about the room.  Upon seeing Roderick the narrator was shocked to see how much he aged. He recalled to when his friend was younger and how much he has changed. With this much change in the friend he knew as a young boy was in disbelief they were the same man. To add to the awe, his friend had changed in a manner of other ways. Rodrick's voice constantly varying added to the nervous tension. The narrator took notice to the very simple things that would bother him. His clothes had to be of certain material, the odor of all flowers were harsh, and his eyes were in distress at the sight of any light. This all was such a strange thing to the narrator which left him worrying about the future. Rodrick was also trapped in his mansion because of his paranoia.

explanation : the quote talks about when he finally arrives to the mysterious mansion and he will be staying there temporarily with his friend for a while. He talks about spending time with his friend for a while.
