Motivation

Emilia's motivation changes throughout the novel while her character matures and grows through the challenges she is put through at a young age. Her first motivation is shame because of the horrible things that happened on the farm and how she was treated. In the quote "You must tell, Emilia. Clear your conscience. Free your soul." (Sepetys 233) shows that she has been lying about August and what really happened to her and she has been too scared to tell them because of the shame that would follow her if she were to reveal that august was just a fictional character. She also says this meaning that the truth has been eating at her soul and shes been hiding it for too long and can't take it any longer. She was so ashamed of the horrific act the Nazi's did to her at such a young age. After meeting Florian he helped her accept having the baby and telling her it was Polish just like her and not focusing on the negative like having the results of her mother and the horrors she remember of when her mother passed away giving birth. This caused Emilias motivation to focus on the baby and the love she has for her. In the quote "But I wasn't looking for a lifeboat. I was looking for the knight" (Sepetys 330) shows that she didn't care about her safety she cared about finding Florian and giving the baby to him because she trusted him and didn't care that she didn't make it and only cared if the baby made it out alive so she didn't go through the struggles and pain for nothing.

Joana has felt guilt through the entire book by making her seem like she's below everyone else which is her taking the blame of her family's murder. The quote "I feel so guilty. My freedom cost her family their lives." (Sepetys 310) This quote shows that she had all the weight of her past, full of guilt built up on her. Joana meeting Florian has helped with her not putting others first and not feeling as bad when she focuses more on herself and not letting the guilt get the best of her. Her love for Florian ends up being her motivation too keep pushing and get through the war to stay with him. In the quote "Florian! I screamed. There was no reply, Florian!" (Sepetys 365) shows that she truly cared for Florian and the love she had for him was sincere.
