This is a descriptive paragraph, we could identify this thanks to phrases like “photosynthesis is…”, “this complex process is…”, “the process can be broadly divided into two main stages…”, “this cycle takes place in…”, “this conversion is…” In addition to the descriptive vocabulary used in the process. On the other hand, we found some elements of the expository text since how the process of photosynthesis is covered through the paper.

Chosen discourse: Argumentative

Analysis

-          The text shows points in favor and against and takes a side in favor of renewable energies. Argumentative discourse uses facts, evidence, and examples to support the ideas presented by the author. It justifies opinions and its structured orderly matter (thesis statement to support paragraphs, which themselves have supporting sentences and a topic sentence). 

-          It uses connectors, appears persuasive, and has a logical order. Its main function is to prove and stand in a specific point of view.

-          In essays, articles, academic books, academia, and research.

-          Structure, use of facts or evidence, connectors, counterarguments, persuasive language, etc.

-          It allows you to see an author’s perspective from the inside and always take into account not only the evidence that it’s showing but also your own standpoint and opinion on the matter.

Text: The Whispering Woods

The text was very easy to categorise as from the first line you can see how the author began to describe a scenario (The Whispering Woods) with care detail. This is the purpose of the text, to create a visual image with in the reader's mind. Also, it has an imperial usage of adjectives such as "moss-covered ground" or "sweet, elusive fragrance of unseen wildflowers". This is a classic example of a text used in literary works like novels, short stories or poems. It creates a detailed setting for a story to take place. It also has elements present in Narrative Discourse like elements modifying or influencing other elements. Also, by describing a place, it begins to build a narrative about the place. Finally, by identifying this type of discourse you will be able to find an appropriate way to approach the text and getting the most out of it. This is why it is important to be a critical reader.

Expository

1. Explanation paragraphs provide detail about how or why things happen by explaining relationships between processes, events or other phenomena. The primary purpose of an explanatory paragraph is to provide information and clarify a concept, idea, or process to the reader.

2. Expository writing often includes a thesis statement, supportive information, explanatory paragraphs and a conclusion that summarizes the information.

3. A typical example of this type of discourse can be found in classrooms, seminars, instructional videos, and expository articles, where specific topics are explained.

4. The clues that we found is that it has a clear topic sentence, the tone is persuasive, and it summarizes the whole issue.

5. Understanding expository discourse helps you as a critical reader by allowing you to identify facts, explanations, and logical structures, making it easier to evaluate the clarity, accuracy, and purpose of the information presented.

Descriptive

·       The text is best identified as Descriptive Discourse because its main purpose is to create a vivid image of the forest. The author uses many adjectives and sensory details, for example “luminescent fungi” or “a cool, damp scent of rich soil,” which appeal to sight, smell, and touch. This helps the reader picture the atmosphere of the woods clearly.

·       Characteristics: It uses rich imagery, adjectives, and sensory language instead of explanations or arguments. The focus is on describing how the place looks, feels, and sounds.

·       Examples: This type of discourse is often found in novels, poems, and short stories, especially when setting the scene or creating a mood.

·       Clues: The presence of detailed descriptions like “sunlight fractured into emerald shards” and “gnarled roots, thick as anaconda coils” shows that the text’s purpose is to describe rather than narrate or explain.

·       As a critical reader: Recognizing descriptive discourse helps us focus on imagery and atmosphere, allowing us to appreciate how language can create emotion and immerse us in a setting.
