The American public should know that America should stay united even when there are disagreements, because we are one of the most powerful countries in the world, and a split like the way it was split in the Civil War can show weakness to other countries which will very much affect us.

In the text, of the Legacy of Juneteenth, you read about how the “absolute equality” is why Lincoln and Major General Gordon Granger came to the conclusion of giving the enslaved people the right.

“Absolute equality" is central to the history of Juneteenth because it represents the ongoing quest to fulfill the promise of freedom and equality for all Americans, regardless of race or ethnicity. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the progress made, the challenges still faced, and the collective responsibility to strive towards a more just and equitable society.

Overall, knowing about the Civil War and Juneteenth celebration is essential for Americans to understand their shared history, the legacies of slavery and racism, and to keep working towards a more inclusive and equitable society.

The source “Women Nurses in the Civil War” says, “While the contributions of Black women during the Civil War were (and still are) often overlooked, in 1902 she published her memoir documenting her experiences during the Civil War” (1). From this line in this passage, we can safely assume that women who worked as nurses in both the Union and Confederacy transformed traditional women’s roles in society thereafter. They proved what they were capable of, as well as their use in medicine. This also pushed the idea that women of color in particular would not be overlooked; that they would be employed in any and all workplaces of men. The American public should know the role and influence that women had on the Civil War. They should understand this because women set foot in places that were generally occupied by men, thousands of soldiers in the Civil War were saved; they drastically altered the result of the War.

This quote from General Order No 3 that was released to the public states, “The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes.” This shows that the slaves were freed and in the General Order No 3 it promises them equality, but it tells them to remain quietly at their present homes and this is because they were not given equal rights, were still needed to work in plantations, and were not accepted by many people still and would have to fight for their rights in coming years. This is because even though one side won the war and abolished slavery the nation was still very divided on this topic so Juneteenth is a way to celebrate how enslaved people gained their freedom, but it is also a way to remind people that equality was not immediately given to black people after they were freed from slavery, and they had to keep pushing boundaries to gain equality.

For instance, in his Second Inaugural Address in 1865, Lincoln states, “Let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne𐩑 the battle and for his widow and his orphan.”

This shows that Lincoln’s vision was for American Citizens to all bind together and form a nation that cared for each other. In addition to this, Abraham Lincoln gave the nation a new way to look at the result in the war. Instead of declaring the North victorious, he said that the country would live due to the efforts of the soldiers. Citizens, whether they were once in the Union or Confederacy, would be united under the beliefs of the United States of America.

So, if there’s one thing people should take away from the efforts of Abraham Lincoln, it should be that he saw the end of the Civil War in a unique way. He realized that to rebuild the country, they couldn’t be divided on their beliefs anymore, and instead they would all have to work for the good of the United States as a whole. 

“My work now began. I gave my [help] to try to [relieve] their sufferings𐩑… My services were given at all times for the comfort of these men.” (Woman Nurses in the Civil War 2) 

These women worked as the Civil War began, they helped aid injured soldiers on the battlefield. They helped work on the farm, well their husbands were away. They even dressed up as men to aid in the war efforts. These woman moved away from the norms of Woman at this time period. 

Something that the American public should know about the Civil War is that women played a massive part in the Civil War. Most people today are unaware of what they did without them the war could have been very different, they would have lost many more soldiers without them, there houses would when at ruins, without the woman of the Civil War.

The Civil War concluded by the emancipation proclamation reaching the slaves in Texas.

“Two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, U.S. Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas.“

Because of General Gordon Granger going to Galveston, Texas the slaves now know that they are free.

The American public should know that Juneteenth is the day the last slave was set free from the actual system of slavery and it is now celebrated as a national holiday.  

Evidence from the Fort Sumter Reading is, “With shots fired by the Confederacy at Fort Sumter, Lincoln declared that rebellion existed in the South and called for 75,000 troops to stop it. The Civil War had officially begun.”

This demonstrates that at The Fall of Fort Sumter the first shots were fired so therefore it shaped the outcome of the Civil War by starting the Civil War and leading the events that followed throughout the Civil War.

The American public should know about this because they should know how the Civil War started and know that without Fort Sumter the war may not have started. Furthermore, the events that followed may not have happened without Fort Sumter.

The civil war was an event that went down in history as the war that gained the United States their freedom, A large part of that was the event of Juneteenth and the brutal fight for freedom.

The emancipation proclamation stated that “all enslaved persons were now free” but this was interpreted as much different. as it states in The Legacy of Juneteenth, “The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for [pay].” Frederick Douglass, “What, to the American Slave, is Your Fourth of July?” states “the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham…your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery.”

Juneteenth was a commemoration of slavery and a celebration of the knowledge that slavery had been abolished. The emancipation proclamation granted slaves their complete and total freedom but it had been interpreted very differently by the people. The difference between what was said and how it was interpreted was that it was supposed to give slaves their complete freedom, but it was thought of by the people as more of a suggestion. The people and the masters added their own twists and catches to keep slavery an ongoing thing. Yes Juneteenth was the remembrance of abolishing slavery, but to the slaves themselves it was a fight to gain their freedom and their struggle back then and still today to fight for equality.

The above post shows one of the most major parts of the Civil war and the perspective of slaves during that cruel time. It informs the public of the history of not only the gain of freedom to our nation but also the fight for freedom and abolishment of slavery.

Juneteenth should be known as a significant part of the Civil War because it ended with enslaved people finally starting to get their freedom. In General Grangers Order no.3 it says that the “equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore𐩑 existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” while they didn't fully get what we call freedom yet, it was at least the start of something large. A lot of the general public doesn't know why Juneteenth is so important but… it really is! We should celebrate the fact that we made a step closer to equality and we should go this direction further.

Juneteenth should be known as a significant part of the Civil War because it was a day of celebration for those who finally got their well-earned freedom.

The Civil War concluded with African Americans getting the freedom they deserved and a new day of celebration. 

On June 19, 1865, U.S. Major “General Granger and his troops informed the people of Texas that all enslaved persons were now free.” (Legacy of Juneteenth)

Although the enslaved people of Texas were technically free for two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, no Union soldiers could enforce this act, and slave owners did not want to believe it. So when General Granger and his troops went to Texas and told them they were free, it became a day of celebration for enslaved people and their communities—now known as Juneteenth. 

Even though July 4th is a celebration of our freedom, it does not recognize those who were enslaved and oppressed of their liberty. Juneteenth is an example of what happens when we unite to shape our world today; to make it more equal.

All in all knowing about the emancipation proclamation in the civil war is something everybody should know about not just because it helped the union win the civil war but also start to give black more rights.

Slavery should be known as a significant part of the Civil War because it was the main cause, and divided the country for decades. 

Even before the Civil War started the U.S was split into two sides, the North and the South. This is evident during the election of Abraham Lincoln: “The States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery”(Ordinance of Secession). 

The South was focused on keeping slavery, as it was a large part of the economy; however, the North was moving towards more anti-slavery (specifically the spread of slavery in the west). This caused a large division in the country during the election because the Southern states, that focused on agriculture, believed Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery and they viewed it as hostile. Then, in 1860 South Carolina became the first state to secede from the nation and become a part of the Confederacy. 

It is important to know about the causes of the Civil War because it was a pivotal point in American history. In the present America is still a divided country, separated by political parties and beliefs. Knowing how the Civil War started could help us know how we can prevent another one in the future.

The american public should know that women took a big place in the result of the civil war. Many women like Mary Ann Bickerdyke individually made a big impact in the world by being nurses and mantaining resources for the soldiers and providing medical care to them while they were fighting in the war.

 In Houston, Texas, it is the date June 17, 1865. A group of enslaved people slaving away until they are interrupted by a General and his soldiers. “General Granger and his troops informed the people of Texas that all enslaved persons were now free. “

The slaves of Houston, Texas were free and not enslaved anymore. They could have been freed 2 and  half years ago but did not get the information until 1865. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 far from Texas which is why General Gordan Granger and his troops were traveling to Texas to let the slaves know they were free.

Lovejoy's death was caused by the disagreement over slavery. Lovejoy was killed due to him trying the abolish slavery with his press and as Orson S. Murray said to lovejoy’s death, “There was nothing in [Lovejoy’s] conduct that justified, in the least, [the proslavery mob’s] opposition”

Several years later, in the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln stated, “And I further declare and make known, that such [freedmen𐩑] of suitable𐩑 condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States to [defend] forts, positions, stations and other places, and to man𐩑 [ships]... in [service to the U.S. Military]” and so because African Americans were now permitted to fight in the war, there were more bodies to help fight with the union in the war, instilling a negative reaction in the confederacy. Along with that, the confederates would’ve been further upset by this because they are, of course, pro-slavery and believe that black individuals are not on the same level as a white man and belong as property.

Both these events divided the country ever more and it didn’t end until the confederacy peacefully surrendered; black Americans knowing their personal rights concluded the civil war because it was the last significant event created by the civil war, like the cherry on top, and said by General Granger in his issue, General Order No.3, “This involves an absolute𐩑 equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore𐩑 existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.”

This strategy is shown to work well if you look at the civil war. With Lincoln’s assassination put aside, the civil war ended very civilly; that is, the Union gave the South favorable surrendering terms. This is demonstrated by Lincoln’s view of the matter, he said “With malice𐩑 toward none with charity𐩑 for all with firmness𐩑 in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds.”

This worked very well for the most part, the South was healed relatively quickly and it’s people were able to swallow the new changes. So, if we ended our many wars with kindness we would be able to help humanity as a whole more.

According to the political violence handout, an abolitionist named John Brown had heard about Senator Sumner being beaten unconscious because he spoke against slavery and ”upon learning about the brutal beating of Senator Charles Sumner, (he) decided it was time to take physical action.” This clearly demonstrates how after people heard about acts of violence committed by a person on one side of the argument, they were enraged with the entirety of that opposing side often retaliating with additional acts of violence.

In conclusion, modern Americans should be aware that it wasn’t one moment that caused the civil war, but a build up of fighting fire with fire causing tension to pulse through the veins of the doomed country was a major. The domino effect of violence.

For example, the video shows how the Confederacy signed a peace treaty with the Union straight for the surrender of the war.

This shows how the Civil War concluded with the surrender of the Confederacy. The terms of the surrender were generous because they were allowed to keep their weapons and horses.

The American public should know today that the confederacy surrendered and signed a peace treaty with the Union which ended the Civil War.

Even though the Emancipation Proclamation issued for slaves to be free, they were to remain at their homes, and have equal rights because slavery was not yet abolished, because it was still written in the Constitution. The slaves were to be paid by their masters for the work they did on the plantation, because this was part of the equal rights agreement in the Legacy of Juneteenth document.

The American public should know about the Civil War today that slavery was not ended on June 19th. This was simply when the slaves in Texas received word of the Emancipation Proclamation, and were not yet freed. This is because slavery is still written in the Constitution, so they were not allowed to leave, but they still gained equal rights, and would be paid for the work they did on the plantation.

In 'Ordinances of Recession' it states, ¨A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. ¨

This supports the claim because after an anti slavery man was put into the office by nobody but the North the South felt like this was an attack on them and making them eventually lead to splitting apart.

Lastly, The American public should know that the Civil War started mainly due to conflict between slavery. This was because the North believed Slaves should have rights while the South believed that Slaves should only be slaves. This led the North to elect an anti slavery president while the South was in shambles which further divided the two.

For example, “The Doctor said the men didn’t need me. So I put it to a vote. I said to the patients “Now those who want me say [Yes] and those who don’t say No.” Every voice echoed [“yes”]”(Women Nurses in the Civil War, source 1 paragraph 2).

With many different women doing many different things they helped many men in the war. Many women were kicked to the side by many of their male colleagues but that did not stop them from doing what they wanted to do. Women kept persisting and working hard, some might say that they work even harder than men.

People should know how women made a big impact in the war and helped as much as they could, and people should also know how women did not give up even when they were pushed to the curb. They work harder than men but yet no one recognized their hard work.  

“The material prosperity𐩑 of the North was greatly dependent on the Federal Government; that of the South not at all” 

The North was more favored than the South by the Union. The South thought that their resources and privileges were minimal compared to the North. The Union was more anti-slavery, so they did not support the South as much. The South was so mad, they made the confederacy, in which turned into the Civil War.

The American public should know that the Civil War was caused because the South thought that their rights and privileges were unfair compared to the North's and they thought the union agreed with the North more.

From the doc, “Gettysburg address” says, “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so [formed] and so dedicated can long endure. We met on a great battlefield of that war.”

Which shows how people were getting into a civil war to test the nation's true power to start the war and try to win. The people leading these battles were struggling from the side of the union until they fought in the Gettysburg battle.

Lincoln's famous quote states “I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided.”

This quote said by Lincoln supports my claim because Lincoln didn’t want the U.S. to fall but if we keep fighting and separate it is going to fall eventually.

The American people need to know about this election because this is what made our nation what it is today.

Lincoln famously said in his 2nd inaugural address speech: “Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces but let us judge not that we be not judged.”

Even though the Civil War ended 150 years ago, African Americans still have to fight against racism to not be treated differently.

“ Sherman set out from Atlanta in November, and over the next month, his troops systematically destroyed anything that could help the Confederate war effort.” (Silent Conversation Source 1) The significant Sherman’s March burning farms, railroads, etc in the south causing citizens to be homeless and starving. This march made a big difference in the economy. The march is the part of the turning point for the Union to win. It disrupts the south and can’t transport stuff in. Which is the best time for the both sides to negotiate to end the war. The American public should know about Sherman’s March and the hard war. The hard war is a war that contains uninvolved people to disrupt the other side. The Sherman’s March are soldiers led by Sherman, they burn down anything they see when they are marching. The Confederacy was winning in the Civil War with a great general but because of this march and others that led the Union to win.

“Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so [formed] and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war.”

“[The North] refuses the admission of new slave States into the Union, and seeks to extinguish it by confining it within its present limits, denying the power of expansion.”

 This shows how the people are fighting inside their own nation because of separate ideas and how this can divide the whole nation because of a large dispute between groups. This is further showing how the dispute between the two different sides is causing the denying of expansion and creating more limits within the country.

The American public should be aware of what happened during the war because it showed how far these teams really went all for the main ideas of keeping or removing slavery from the country.

In a video I have been provided it talked about how “the Union created a very generous surrender letting the confederacy keep their weapons, horses, and to not be charged for their crimes in exchange for them to surrender.”

This demonstrates how the Civil War ended when general Robert E. Lee signed the surrender document.

The American public should know that the Civil War ended because the confederacy signed Ulysses Grant and Lincoln's surrender document.

For instance, the text says, “Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God and each invokes His aid against the other.” (Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural Address). As well as, “...in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds…” (Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address).

This portrays how Lincoln’s address is a significant moment in our history, because he spoke of these things in his address to convince the Union and the Confederacy that they believe in the same things, and pray to the same god. So why should they fight? He also speaks about how God has given them the right to bind up the nation’s wounds. He uses these techniques to convince the divided nation, because God is seemingly the only uniting factor.

The source Women Nurses in the Civil War states a story about a lady being active in her community during the Civil War. “Susie Taylor King would go on to serve the Union Army in various ways. As she grew up, her grandmother arranged for her to learn to read and write by attending secret schools taught by free Black women.” 

Prior to the Civil War, women were just seen in kitchens doing house work. During the war, many women were active in their communities by becoming nurses to help those soldiers injured, or becoming fighters to help their side win the war. Susie being one out of the many women involved with their country during the Civil War impacted all generations of women to come and their duties outside of their homes.

The American public should know about Women working in the Civil War because it opens their eyes to an immense reason on why women's freedom is seen today.

The american citizens of today need to know that even though the emancipation proclamation was signed, not everyone was freed right away. Even though people were free the fight for civil and natural rights continues today.

it also states “Lincoln appointed him General-in-Chief in March 1864. Grant directed Sherman to drive through the South while he himself, with the Army of the Potomac, pinned down Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Finally, on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court”

This shows how good of a leader grant was and he was such a good leader that he was elected as president because the people looked up to how good of a leader he was.

His strategies where different than anyone had ever seen which led him to victory.

Most women during the Civil War stayed home and did things around the house. However there were a few who tried to help the war effort. The women who tried to help the war effort did this by making uniforms for the soldiers or helping with amunitons; Some even disguised themselves as men so they could enlist and fight in the war. Another person who helped with shaping the outcome of the war was General Sherman. General Sherman and his march to the sea was a contributing factor near the end of the war. Sherman burned everything in his path on his march through the south, and while doing this he brought the south to its knees. 

This evidence supports my claim by showing several different people and events that helped shape the outcome of the war. It also shows how people in the north could come together and make things happen. 

Another reason is because the evidence helps recognize and acknowledge all those people and events that helped in whatever way they could.

I think that the American public should know how it wasn't just one person who won the war for the north, it wasn't just one group who won the war for the north; it was everyone contributing something. Lincoln and his speeches and support for the war, General Sherman and his march to the sea, women making ammunition and uniforms, Native Americans and their support. These were only some of the people who helped with the war and I think that the American public should know about all of them and how they helped during the Civil War. And by knowing everyone who helped win and shape the outcome of the war I believe we are recognizing them and all they did to help.

So with June teenth slavery was still going on it was more the knowledge  of it ending its more of a knowledge

that things are finally getting better for now and the future

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance𐩑 with a proclamation from the [president] of the United States, all slaves are free.”

This demonstrates how slaves in Texas were free, and now the people can live freely in their town of Galveston, Texas.

The American public should know about the Civil War today that Juneteenth isn’t just slaves being freed. Juneteenth is about not only the freedom of slaves, but the long road that it took just to become free. African-Americans endured the worst, not only working their butts off, but fighting for freedom. Once this freedom was gained they did not find out till two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

Dred and Harriet Scott where families of slaves. In the video it says, “Dred Scott sued for his freedom.” Political violence had a big effect on dividing our nation. A man named Rep. Sumner was beaten because of a fiery speech that had effects on lots of people. This is another event that had further divided our nation.

he evidence supports the claim because it further explains how slavery and political violence had further divided our nation before the Civil War started. The Civil War started because of the Nation being divided in two.

“Samuel Anderson of our company. He was badly wounded. Then others of our boys, some with their legs off, arm gone, foot off, and wounds of all kinds imaginable…”

This represents that not only women, but black women were given opportunities to escape, run away, join the army as nurses and help & heal the wounded soldiers. This allowed women to earn incomes and get jobs even after the war. It also gave the chance to really start breaking the wall of division & racism throughout the country.

The Interactive Map of Secession shows, “November 6th, 1860 - Lincoln wins election [...] December 20th, 1860 - South Carolina secedes.”(Interactive Map Of Secession) Soon after Republican candidate Lincoln became president, the South states became upset with the outcome of the election, as they both felt cheated by the results and feared that slavery (vital to their economy) would be abolished. In under two months, the first of the states seceded. The election of 1860 is important for the American public to know about the Civil War today because it contradicts a common belief that the war was caused only because of slavery, when in actuality, it was because the South felt betrayed by the election and that slavery and their way of life was being threatened. 

First was Lincoln's ideas that all men should be created equal “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, [formed] in liberty and dedicated to the [idea] that all men are created equal.” Second was the battle of Gettysburg, the reason for this is because of that changed the tides of war by having thousands of losses on both sides but more on the confederacy side. Lastly was Sherman's march and this demonstrated to the south that they are willing to use hard war to end the war and discourage the confederacy.

The reason why all three sources support my claim is because with Lincoln's ideas he supported the nations and supported the union through the fight. The fight at Gettysburg changed the tides of war by having a lot of loss on both sides of confederacy and union but in the end was a hard hit to the confederate forces. Lastly Sherman fought his way through the south states to show them hard war tactics and weaken them to make them surrender. All in all there wasn’t just one power helping win the Civil war there were multiple ideas events and people to help them win it.

“Grant and Lincoln wanted at all costs to prevent a kind of guerilla warfare…the surrender terms were relatively lenient” (surrender video) “This involves an absolute equality of personal rights”(General Order No.3)

As you can see, if you want to bring the country back together after a civil war you have to make sure the other side isn’t bitter otherwise they would just secede again. This is just one of the reasons that Lincoln was a great president, the other reason is that he helped in the abolishment of slavery by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation which was then enforced by General Order No. 3 which was one of many great attempts to bring equality and stop a force that is older than recorded history: stealing from others.

Lincoln’s 2nd Inaugural Address Speech further concluded the Civil War by creating more unison between the two sides. He shows how they can still have a connection even though they do not have the same thoughts and beliefs and he tries to find things they can all connect to further their nation. He states, “If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which in the providence of God must needs come but which having continued through His appointed time He now wills to remove and that He gives both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came…” (Speech) Lincoln used his win in the war to get the two sides back as one again instead of using it to create more tension. He further reunites the people by referencing something everyone had in common like God. He used his power to build our nation and help everybody realize they could live in unison. 

This was proven when the men wanted the women nurses to stay instead of the male doctors. This is shown when Mary Ann Bickerdyke said, “So I put it to a vote. I said to the patients, ‘Now those who want me say I, and those who don’t say no.’ Every voice echoed ‘I,’ and the doctor, with a voice like a lion, said ‘no.’”

This proves that women were very capable and could do anything men could do—and sometimes even do it better. They also took on brave and dangerous tasks that many men wouldn’t even dare to do.

Evidence:Juneteenth is a national holiday that black people have fought for for hundreds of years. This holiday also represents the strength and perseverance that black people had.  Based on the Source 2 Juneteenth the Legacy, “On April 9, 1865, the Confederacy surrendered to the United States, bringing an end to the Civil War. Still, in Texas, the westernmost state under Confederate control, slavery continued. Freedom for enslaved people in Texas was finally achieved on June 19, 1865, when 2,000 U.S. troops, including Black soldiers, arrived in Galveston, Texas. These soldiers brought with them the power to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation”

Reasoning:This shows how black people had to work and prove thyself worthy of the freedom by helping the union to take over texas.  As a result of this,African Americans get to celebrate Juneteenth as a national holiday honoring there freedom, strength,and perseverance.
