Planning with the end goal in mind allows you to "guide" your students towards the end goals, rather having them guess what the end will look like. Each assessment has a purpose and is the step towards the end. As teachers we must design all assessments with a purpose, and make students aware of that purpose.

Pacing of the coursework, and the diversity of student needs. We must accommodate to each student along their journey which can throw your timeline off. We must accept flexibility in that aspect.

Sharing the learning goals allows them to see the journey they are about to go on. It is important for students to see what they are aiming for. Clearly outlined goals for students help them track their own progress as well helps them understand why each task is important.

1. When you start with the end in mind, you're clearer about what students actually need to show by the time they finish the unit. It helps you design assessments that truly match the skills and knowledge you want them to learn instead of just testing whatever was taught last. The lessons are also kept more focused, and choosing activities that move students toward that final goal becomes much easier. In the end, it all connects together and seems intentional.

2. One problem is that it takes more time up front to think through what the final goals are and plan everything backward from there. It can also feel tricky when trying to predict what students will struggle with before you've even taught the material. To overcome this, you can start small- maybe applying backward design to just one unit at a time, and adjust as you learn what works. Getting feedback from other teachers, or looking at sample units can also make the process a lot easier.

3. Sharing the goals gives students a clear idea of what they're working toward and why each activity matters. It helps them stay focused because they understand what success looks like from the beginning. When students know the expectations, they can take more ownership of their learning and track their own progress. It also reduces confusion and builds confidence as they move through the unit.
