The book begins of discussing where she is born, the date, and gives a map in Mexico exactly where. They also state her real name which is Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon. This would be beneficial as students would be able to see what country and where she was born/lived the majority of her life. The book also explains the love for her country which is not only shown in the way she dressed, but is shown through her paintings. Students will also be able to have the chance to learn about her diverse home life as her mother was a Jewish Hungarian German immigrant. Within the target text it talks about how Frida became sick and was on bed rest although does not get into specific detail. The target text is a basic chronological order of Frida's life, while this book is more in depth.

Introduction to the Frida Kahlo Text Set - Part 1

I chose to create a set text around Frida Kahlo because she one of the most influential artist within the 20th century. Many of her art included self portraits and depicted gender roles that she protested through her emotions. In elementary schools her work is often looked at to compare her different styles of art such as surrealism, realism, and and Mexican folk art. Frida grew up in a culturally diverse home as her father was German and her mother was Mexican, all while living in Mexico herself. Frida had many set backs within her life although this only influenced her art through her feelings.

With this text set I have chosen various multimodal texts and prints that not only highlight her beautiful art, but highlight who she was as a person. Each text engages students to learn about Frida, her culture, and meanings behind the paintings. Students would have the opportunity to view her artwork, listen to a podcast, and read multiple texts around her life. Most text gives details regarding who she was as a person and an artist. Other text has more detailed information about what motivated her to paint. Many students within my clinical placement enjoy going to art, as this is a way for them to be creative outside of the classroom. I think my clinical students would be intrigued on Frida Kahlo and why she was such a big influence in the art world.

My experience when searching for texts within this set was fairly easy. There were various books to find whether that was Barns and Noble, Amazon, and online in general. It was also easy to find multimodal examples such as the digital art tour, and digital walkthrough of Frida's house. The only part that was more difficult to find was the podcast I used for one of my multimodal responses. Advice for teachers I would give who use this text set, would be after students learn about who Frida is, you could have students draw on their own. Frida was know for different styles of art such as surrealism, symbolism, and modern art. Depending on the grade level, students especially in elementary school could do an art activity with symbolism!

There are aspects that are true about Frida's life, although the author eventually takes a turn and forms a storyline based on Frida's life. This would give students the opportunity to read about a creative story alongside someone they are learning about.

I would just make students aware what parts are factual within the book and what is fiction.
CCSS ELA Standard:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.3

Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).

Target Text for Quad Text Set :

Hook Text :

This would be a good hook text that could be read to students. Although this book is more challenging and a higher grade level, reading a piece of this book would draw students in. This would draw students in and become curious about her life and want to read more.
