Tool: Considerations for Forming Small Groups.

Why did you choose this tool?
I realise that in a middle school mathematics class group work and exploration can be really powerful and I want to increase and better my construction and use of groupings.

How will you incorporate it into the unit?
I will place students into groupings more frequently when working through topics such as Algebra and Equations to allow for more collaboration and learning and discussion of concepts. I will try to design groupings to both help support students with the concept of a more knowledgable other, as well as using ability groupings to extend and allow for hitting each students ZPD.

What documentation will you bring to our Feb 14th meeting?
I will bring evidence of the groupings made as well as student responses to the question "identify one thing that worked well and one thing they need to work on" (pg116)

Tool - structures for giving and receiving feedback.

Why did I choose this tool?
I think it's really important for students to feel like they are a part of their learning. In upper elementary, we focus a lot on student goals. I want them to be a part of their own goal setting and be able to explain to me and their peers when and how they have met these. I think it's also amazing when students hear feedback from each other. They find it so valuable. A big part of what I do as an EAL teacher, is feedback to students about their writing (grammar, spelling, etc). I noticed that when peers feedback to each other, they made more changes over time in their writing habits.

How will you incorporate it into the unit?
I will give my students multiple opportunities to discuss their learning with me and their peers. I have used the see-think-wonder routine. I would like to use the ladder of feedback routine, as well as posting comments made by students and adults.

What documentation will you bring to our Feb 14th meeting?
Some photos and written evidence. Perhaps a possible recording of what they think. I could also record a student when using the ladder of feedback.

Tool 5 - Structures for giving feedback

Why did I choose this tool?
I agreed that holding students accountable for their own learning and modeling or learning from peers are more powerful and effective than receiving feedbacks from teachers.

How will I incorporate into the unit?

I will introduce this concept starting next UOI and ELA units. First , I will model for my students how we can offer constructive feedback and then invite some students to model and then peer model for each others.

What documentation will you bring to our Feb 14th meeting?

Students written notes, Flipgrid/Seesaw, or videos.
