I personally think you should always include a customized cover letter when applying.

**If you are recycling a cover letter, DOUBLE CHECK that you CHANGE/DELETE all mentions of the previous employer in the cover letter.

Ensure that you have the correct institution or organization's name on the cover letter that you're submitting with your application.

Research the place before the interview

This isn't specific to libraries but take the time to review the organization's website, strategic priorities, services, staffing structure, and recent initiatives.

I think that candidates often spend a lot of time preparing answers to common questions but very little time learning about the institution itself. You don't need to know everything, but if you're familiar with the library's programs, challenges, and goals, you'll be able to ask better questions and demonstrates genuine interest in the role.

Dress professionally even if it is just an initial Zoom screening video. If you are going to be in person OR on camera.....dress professionally! Even on a phone screening call. A lot of library positions expect that they will need to train new hires on their specific procedures and application setups. Asking about training/CE resources shows that you are interested and willing to learn what their setups and procedures are, as well as expanding your own skillset.
