Author: Eric Carle
Age: 0-4 years
Núria Balagué Linares

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is Carle's third book, and uses distinctive collage illustrations that were innovative at the time of publication, 'eaten' holes in the pages, and simple text with educational themes – counting, the days of the week, foods, and a butterfly's life stages. It teaches children how to count and to make one-to-one correspondences between numbers and the items the Very Hungry Caterpillar has eaten. There have been many related books and other products, including educational tools, created in connection to the book. The Very Hungry Caterpillar's diet is fictional rather than scientifically accurate, but the book introduces concepts of Lepidoptera life stages where transformations take place including the ultimate metamorphosis from 'hungry caterpillar' to 'beautiful butterfly'.

Written by Natalia Simons

This is a tale about a little girl who spends her summer in a village in Spain. She lives in England the rest of the year and therefore, she is more fluent in English than in Spanish. She is not able to speak to much Spanish and many children laugh of her during her summer, but even so her grandmother tell her how lucky she is to be able to understand two languages and be part of two cultures.
Personal opinion: I think many children can feel related to this book as there are children who belong to two cultures due to having parents of different nationalities, children who are newcomers, children who use two languages in their every day, etc.
This story would show the importance of linguistic and cultural respect.

Cintia Astrid Manonelles Fuentes

Age: 7-12
There was once a fairy who was learning how to be a fairy godmother. Most magic and wonderful, she was the kindest and cleverest of all fairies. However, she was also a very ugly fairy. And no matter how much she showed her wonderful qualities, it seemed that everyone was determined to believe that the most important thing about a fairy was her beauty. In the fairy school they ignored her, and every time she flew off on a mission to help a child or anyone else in trouble, before she could say a word they were already screeching and yelling at her: "Ugly! Get out of here, weirdo!"

Despite her being little, her magic was very powerful, and more than once she had considered using it to make herself beautiful. But then she remembered what her mother had always told her: "My dear, you are what you are, warts and all; and never doubt that you are this way for a very special reason..."

But then, one day, the witches of the neighbouring land invaded and destroyed the country, putting all the fairies and wizards in prison. Our fairy, just before being attacked, put a spell on her own clothes and, helped by her ugly face, she managed to pass for a witch. That way she was able to follow the witches back to their den.

Once there she used her magic to prepare a big party for everyone, decorating the cave with bats, toads and spiders. The music was provided by a pack of howling wolves. While the party was in full swing, the fairy hurried off and set free all the fairies and wizards who had been imprisoned. When all of them were free, they worked together on one big spell which succeeded in trapping the witches inside the mountain for the next hundred years. And for the next hundred years, and more, everyone remembered the great bravery and intelligence of the ugly fairy.

And from that day on no one in that land ever saw ugliness as a disgrace. Whenever someone ugly was born, people were filled with joy, knowing that for that new person great things lay ahead.

Pedro Pablo Sacristán

MALENA THE WHALE

Malena the whale is a tale against fatphobia and against sexual harassment that

tells the story of Malena, a fat girl who has swimming lessons weekly. She doesn't like to go into the s
wimming pool because the children yell at her, "Malena is a whale!". Malena's mind had transformed her into what others told her... she feels heavy and as big as a whale, she feels ugly, not accepted, and she thinks that no one loves her.

Noticing that Malena was discouraged during the lessons, one day her swimming teacher told her: "We are what we think we are," and gave her very useful advice. He recommended her that if she wants to be light, she has to think she is. (the teacher only talk to Malena, and say nothing to the children taht bully her, but...)

And in addition to bullying, unfortunately our protagonist has to face another evil: sexual harassment. Without giving much explanation, the story tells us that when Malena leaves the pool late and goes home, a man stalks her and says, "Where are you going, little mushroom?". The author tells: “Malena didn't like those words at all. She never answered and ran without looking at him”.

With the help of her teacher's advice, Malena imagines that she is huge, giant, and stares at the man in the eye, and when he was about to open his mouth, that stranger said nothing. Malena is happy to think that the technique works.

The next swimming lesson arrives, and this time Malena feels light in the water. "She moved like a fish, thought 'sardine,' 'eel,' 'barracuda,' 'shark'"... And every time she imagines faster and more agile things, and Malena can do all the swimming styles she wanted. Everyone applauded her and didn't insult her anymore.

This story shows us many circumstances that girls must live with: low self-esteem as a result of cruel comments and the standards of society in general; the mistaken perception they have of themselves because of these labels; sexual harassment from which women do not escape, whatever their age, specifically street harassment.

But it also shows us the capacity of empathy of the people who love us, the good that positive advice can do; how the perception of ourselves is much more powerful than any comment made with bad intentions towards us; the influence that the mind has on our body.

By imagining herself in a thousand ways, Malena learned to see the value in herself and in her body. She understood that with her body, she can do whatever she wants and more. She even managed to get the boy she likes to look at her and smile at her, because she feels more confident and she passes it on to others. And finally, she doesn't mind being called a "whale" because it's simply not a bad thing. She is as she is, and so she is happy.

Ruth Gozalbo
