"Read your morning papers, read every single line
And tell me if you can believe that simple world you find
Read every slanted word till your eyes are getting sore"

Ochs is making a point that what they show on the media can often be twisted. Especially with Nixon's presidency during the Vietnam War, it was found that he had a secret plan to end the war. Not only did Nixon never claim to have a “secret plan” to end the war, he pointedly and publicly disavowed such a notion. In an article published March 28, 1968, in the Los Angeles Times, Nixon was quoted as saying he had “no gimmicks or secret plans” for Vietnam. The media went crazy over this, and because Vietnam was one of the big media wars there were a lot of things on TV and newspapers.

"Put ragged clothes upon your back and sleep upon the ground
And tell police about your rights as they drag you down
And ask them as they lead you to some deserted door"

Ochs is claiming how the soldiers are treated like a tool for the war, "tell police about your rights as they drag you down" and the "deserted door" refers to things such as jail, implying the rights the soldiers lost and since if they choose to refuse in anyway, they'll end up in jail or something similar.

"listen to your radio, the noise it starts to pour" anything citizens could imagine were pouring out of TV and radio. For example, one Vietcong that was caught, and it was shown straight on TV of him falling to the ground after he took a bullet to his head, it was one of the brutal scenes that was aired on TV.

The song addresses many political issues within the Vietnam war. Such as media representation and draft / injustice towards soldiers. A lot of brutal scenes were aired on TV for everyone to see and the draft for the war became a huge issue due to how people were drafted. Vietnam war was also the longest war in American history, a lot of people were upset of their kids dying out in the field and seeing no progress in the war. The song definitely addressed many issues during the Vietnam war, wrapping all of it together with its title, "What Are You Fighting For?"

This relates to Phil Ochs' song because it shows exactly how the protest went about. "What are you fighting for?" this lyrics reflects on the sign shown below, "my song was killed in Vietnam what for?" portraying how many were unsatisfied with the unnecessary deaths of the soldiers who were forced into the war that is showing no signs of getting better / gaining progress.
