A "global burden of disease" is a measure of the prevalence and severity of a particular disease within a specific region. For example, AIDS cases may be low in the United States but in Eswatini, it is one of the main reasons for premature deaths. These differences in prevalence and severity are largely due to the income/resource level of countries. Countries with greater economies can afford public health interventions such as health education and community health outreach. This is where the basis of global health and international health come in, in which countries from across the world provide resources to each other in an attempt to provide health equity throughout all populations.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

According to the World Heart Federation, the global health burden of CVD is the world's deadliest killer, being responsible for 1/3 of all deaths worldwide. This is especially relevant in low and middle income countries in which their prevalence and mortality is much higher than high income countries. It is this type of health inequity that needs to be overcome by the resource sharing of all countries in an attempt to not only provide better health equity but also lessen CVD deaths in their own countries.

CVD due to Stress

This article puts into perspective the long-lasting effects that stress has on Cardiovascular disease. Specifically, I wanted to point out how in this article, stress is only seen as a factor towards CVD in European health guidelines, not globally. This is especially important to acknowledge when talking about global health burdens as all countries should be working together to eradicate/lessen the prevalence of CVD. Not one country/region should have awareness/knowledge about a disease that others don't acknowledge themselves. CVD, especially as the world's number 1 killer, should be a project that all countries create the same guidelines for in acknowledging all of its risk factors.

Deaths from Diarrheal Diseases

This image showcases a slow downward trend in the amount of deaths from 1990 to 2017. The largest improvement seen is for children under 5 years old. Their category went from ~1.7 million deaths to around 700,000 deaths annually. Although this number is still large, this does showcase how millions of lives have been saved during this 27 year period. The cause of this downward trend is most likely due to public health interventions done in the country such as sanitation, public awareness, and treatment. If other countries decide to further their aid for this cause, we would most likely see an even more downward trend.

Undernutrition and Diarrhoeal Disease

This article explains and quantifies the connection between undernutrition and the life-year estimates for diarrhoeal disease in children. According to the article, there was a 39% increase in diarrhoeal diseases associated with undernutrition in addition to an 84.7% risk of further infection from other diseases during diarrhoeal episodes. Malnutrition in children is mostly caused by the lack of available resources in specific regions of a country. This global health burden, which although differs throughout the world, can have its prevalence lessened through the use of better integration of resources to the poorer parts of the world in addition to incorporating more community-based projects like food banks or local health centers.

The Global Health Burden of Depression

Depression, in today's world, is a mental health disorder that everyone knows about. Whether that be you are affected or you know someone who is themselves, depression has affected our way of life daily. In this article, it describes the constant upward trend of this mental health disorder from 1990 to 2017. Specifically, it describes a 49.86% increase during that 27 year period. And this isn't even accounting for our current pandemic era. Aside from CVD, depression is one of the top global health disorders. It is this reason alone, along with the physiological toll it takes on its victims, that countries around the world need to take a better initiative in lessening its prevalence. This can be through public health interventions, research as to why people get depressed, or better resource availability.

This picture depicts the global prevalence of depression according to region and gender. This image is especially important to the topic of global health burden as it not only showcases the differences in prevalence across regions but also just how serious depression is. Depression, in this context, affects millions of people daily, with that number only increasing annually. In order to lessen the prevalence, we need to globally contribute towards researching the subject in hopes of finding both the causes and ways of prevention.
