As they experience the same treatment from others, they learn to appreciate the forest and the bird they previously mistreated.

Art and Genre Characteristics: The illustrations are expressive with few vivid colors and organic outlining to encourage the readers imagination. The back of each page is left blank, also to invite the reader’s own visualization. Jagged lines are used around the staff that transforms the children into monkeys to show danger, diagonal lines are used when the children are in some type of imbalance with nature, and horizontal lines are used in the background when there is a sense of calmness or resolution. This wordless picture book follows a traditional narrative structure with characters that change over time but does not have actual text. The meaning is created through illustrations and interpretation of the reader.

Representation: Birdsong represents the vulnerability of nature and abuse of power of humans. It encourages a self and cultural analysis of our own treatment of others and nature.

Classroom Uses: This book can be used with a variety of grades, from kindergarten to 5th or even 8th grade to do self-reflections and effects on nature. It can also be used to do compare and contrast analysis between parts of the book or to one’s own life.

The changing skin is fantastical and allows the reader to imagine: what if others could see my insecurities? The busyness of the illustrations shows the chaos and confusion that are going on with Camila and those who are trying to treat her.
