  • The biggest and easiest symbol to find in this statue is that it symbolizes victory. 
    • We can see this through David having his foot on top of Goliath's head. 
    • David appears super strong as he stands over Goliath. 
  • The statue of David will also symbolize Florence, shown as the underdog that defeats the city of Milan. 
  • We can see that David looks a lot younger than any Roman Sculpture that is big and strong, but this is symbolizing youthful beauty in independence and strength. Through the depiction of the youthful David, Donatello is able to tell his audience that David’s victory over Goliath should be attributed to God over himself.

Before the Renaissance, in the Medieval era, nudity was rarely featured in artworks, as it only appeared in some Biblical stories. By depicting David in this way, Donatello added a Classical element to the sculpture.

    Another way Donatello featured Classical elements in the artwork was by depicting him in a contrapposto pose. This relaxed pose contrasted from the Medieval era and was inspired by the Ancient Romans and Greeks. An example of this pose in the Classical period is provided in the padlet.
    Both of these features supported the Renaissance ideas as many Classical characteristics were “revived” during this era.
