At the most basic level, solar panels work by converting sunlight into energy. This requires the use of photovoltaic cells, which consist of two layers of semiconductor material. Manufacturers infuse the top layer of the cell with phosphorus, which gives it a negative charge in the form of free electrons. The thicker bottom layer, meanwhile, receives a boron infusion, which creates a positive charge.

The difference in charge between the two layers creates an electric field in the space between. Then, when the photons in sunlight hit the cell, they loosen electrons in the top layer. Since opposite charges attract, the free electrons flow toward the positively charged bottom layer, at which point they are caught up in the electric field between the two layers and channeled into an external circuit.

As electrons move through this external circuit, they create an electric flow. An independent community educational nonprofit, WSPE strives to continually support and improve the general quality of education and student resources for elementary and secondary schools in the West Springfield area. One of the WSPE’s annual events is the organization’s official spelling bee. This competition welcomes participants from a wide variety of local schools and scholarly organizations.

The 21st annual WSPE Spelling Bee took place on March 6, 2017, in the mini theater of West Springfield High School. WSPE president Kevin McQuillan moderated the event. Celebrity judges included local politicians such as West Springfield mayor Will Reichelt and Massachusetts State Senator Jim Welch.
