Sleep is a restful state, making a person partially inactive, unaware, and detached from the environment because the senses are blocking most external stimuli. When a person sleeps, the body's vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, heart beat, and other bodily functions generally decrease. However, the brain continues to function actively. While the number of hours required depends on a person's age, the importance of sleep to the overall well-being is something not to be disregarded.

Hence, when you start noticing a disruption in your normal sleep pattern, or that of any family member's, it might be a good idea to take a sleep test at home for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition wherein there are one or more pauses in breathing during sleep. While it's not entirely life-threatening, it can lead to even worse conditions, which is why it's a good idea to address the problem right away.

Sleep Requirements in Human

Sleep requirements change as the human person develops. When an infant is born, the amount of sleep required is from 16 to 18 hours a night. The number of hours decrease to 14 or 15 at age one. By the time the child become four years old, he needs to sleep at least 10 to 12 hours. At age 10, his sleeping requirement is 10 hours. Sleep further decreases as a person grows into an adult with a requirement of seven to eight hours of sleep. Older people are inclined to sleep less at night, but frequently snooze at daytime, reverting to childhood sleeping patterns.

The average amount of sleep that a human person needs is normally between six to eight hours a day. However, this pattern may also depend upon a person's capacity to sleep longer or shorter than the others. Sleep experts recommend that the best way to determine one's sleep requirements is by waking up naturally, i.e., without being jolted by an alarm clock. The body automatically wakes up when it feels that it has generated sufficient amount of sleep. A good amount of sleep will equip the body of its needed energy for most of the day.

Sleep may decrease as one gets older. However, the truth is the importance of sleep and its amount does not change with age. What change are the sleep patterns and circadian rhythms along with age. During infancy, 50 percent of sleeping time is spent in non-rapid eye movement (REM) and the other 50 percent in rapid eye moment (REM) sleep. It is during this time when growth hormones are being released, benefiting the sleeping child. On the other hand, adults spend only 20 percent in REM sleep, further decreasing to 15 percent as they grow older. This means that older adults' sleeping time is mostly in the non-REM sleep, accounting for the reason why they sleep less or frequently wake up during their sleep.

Seeing as how sleep is vital for everyone regardless of age, conducting an Apnealink air test is highly recommended.

The Benefits of Sleep

Sleep is an important biological function. It is a natural rhythm known as the biological clock. Sleep is essential to maintain a person's general well-being. Without sleep, a person's natural capacity to perform using his different faculties is dramatically diminished.

Without enough sleep, an individual may perform below par and feel drowsy during the day. He becomes less active, inattentive, and lacks focus. Continuous sleep deprivation can cause erratic behavior, extreme mood swings, delusions, and eventually, death. In order to truly have a healthy body, you must always strive for a better sleep.
