Social media platforms are designed to keep people scrolling by showing stuff that makes them feel strong emotions. Studies show that negative news actually spreads more easily online, and 64% of people say it increases their stress (American Psychological Association, 2017). This constant flow of dramatic updates releases dopamine, a

"feel-good" chemical in our brain, making us want to scroll more. On the other hand, long movies with stats require more focus and attention, which can be hard when the average person's attention span is just 8 seconds (Microsoft, 2015). So, while doomscrolling gives quick emotional hits, movies full of statistics take more effort to watch, and many people just don't have the patience for that. Discussions about doomscrolling usually focus on how it can make people feel anxious, stressed, or even depressed. A lot of people, especially teens, find themselves scrolling through social media or news apps for hours, seeing all kinds of bad news about the world. Some argue that it's hard to stop because it feels like you need to stay updated on everything, like you'll miss something important if you don't keep scrolling. But research shows that this constant checking can actually make you feel worse, with studies showing that it can increase feelings of anxiety and worry. People also talk about how doomscrolling can take up a lot of time and distract from other things, like homework or hanging out with friends. In the end, many discussions point out that while it's okay to stay informed, constantly checking negative news can be bad for your mental health, and it's important to take breaks and focus on more positive activities.

Why Short-Form Content Dominates

The shift towards short-form content is driven by three main factors:

1. **Limited Attention Spans**: Modern users prefer quick, digestible content that fits into brief breaks throughout their day. The average attention span has decreased significantly, making 15-60 second videos more appealing than longer formats.

2. **Mobile-First Consumption**: Smartphones have become the primary device for content consumption. Short, vertical videos are perfectly suited for mobile viewing, making platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts naturally appealing.

3. **Algorithm Optimization**: These platforms use sophisticated algorithms to deliver highly personalized content streams, keeping users engaged through rapid-fire, relevant content delivery.

Effects on Society and Business

Behavioral Changes

- Decreased tolerance for longer content formats

- Enhanced ability to quickly process information

- Changed how people communicate and share ideas

- Shifted entertainment preferences toward bite-sized content

Business Impact

- Lower content production costs

- Faster content testing and iteration

- New marketing strategies focused on authenticity

- Increased emphasis on user-generated content

The preference for short-form content isn't just a trend—it's a fundamental shift in digital communication.

1. Percentage of time spent on social media vs traditional media:

Social media has increasingly become a dominant source of entertainment and information, particularly among younger demographics. On average, people may spend anywhere from 30% to 70% of their media consumption time on social media, with the remaining time dedicated to traditional media such as TV, newspapers, and radio. The exact split varies by age, location, and interests.

2. Key reasons for preferences:

• Convenience: Social media platforms offer quick access to personalized content at any time, while traditional media often requires scheduled viewing or reading.

• Interactivity: Social media allows users to interact with content, share their opinions, and engage in discussions, which is absent in traditional media formats.

• Variety: Social media platforms offer a wide array of content from multiple sources, often tailored to users’ tastes, making it more engaging compared to the often passive nature of traditional media.

• Real-time updates: Social media provides instant access to news, trends, and updates, which traditional media may not always be able to deliver in real-time.

3. Brief explanation of findings and insights:

Social media has dramatically reshaped how people consume media. The flexibility, engagement, and constant flow of information on social platforms have made them more appealing than traditional media. As a result, social media is influencing viewing choices by offering on-demand, interactive, and personalized content that often aligns with individual preferences. Traditional media, while still important, often lags behind in terms of immediacy and variety. This shift suggests that for content creators and advertisers, a strategy that integrates both social and traditional media may be most effective to reach diverse audiences.

People prefer social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram over TV series for several reasons. Social media offers instant gratification with short, bite-sized content.
Another reason is customization. Social media lets users follow specific interests, with algorithms curating content that fits their preferences. TV series usually require sticking to one show or channel without offering the same level of flexibility.
Interactivity is also a major draw. Social media allows users to engage directly with content through likes, comments, and shares. This level of interaction is missing from the passive experience of watching TV series.
Social media also offers variety. There’s a wide range of content, from funny clips to tutorials and live streams. TV series, in contrast, are often confined to specific genres or formats.
Platforms like TikTok and Instagram bring people together around specific trends or conversations. TV series tend to be more isolated or limited to niche fan communities.
