The United States, attempting to protect Iran and its oil from communism, back a monarchist government led by a Shah. The Shah was pro-western thought, advocating for reforms like women's rights and capitalist economics. The Shah is overthrown in 1979, and Iraq becomes a theocracy. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini becomes the leader and enshrines Shi'a law. They want to put the Shah on trial, but the United States will not extradite him. Followers in the Tehran break into the U.S. embassy and take hostages for over 400 days. U.S. special forces attempt to take the hostages but fail. After Ronald Reagan takes office, the hostages are released.

In Dec. 1979, the Soviets invade Afghanistan under the pretext of upholding the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978. In reality, it was to maintain a newly formed communist government in the country. Within a few days of invasion, the Soviets had control of the capital but could not bring the rest of the country under their control. After a decade of fighting revolutionary forces, they retreat and give up. This was another chip in the friendly relations the U.S. and USSR were trying to build over the previous decades.

They had lost 10-3 against the Soviets in the final exhibition game before the Olympics. Though the United States would prevail and snatch the gold medal from the Soviets, beating them 4-3. This is considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history and bolstered American nationalism.

on March 23, 1983 Ronald Reagan announces a new program entitled SDI (Strategic Defensive Initiative), where air defense systems would be located in space to prevent the United States from being hit by a large nuclear attack. The Reagan administration proposed that this tech could end the Cold War, but many across country expressed concern about the viability and cost of the project. They feared that the technology could not be made and would harm other government programs such as education and welfare. Ultimately, SDI never worked as the technology for it was not ready.

Allowing opinions to be expressed, many revolutions occur in the USSR and the Perestroika, the reform that was supposed to better the political system and economy, leads to strains and confusion about how exactly these reforms were supposed to work. The attempt to reform served as a catalyst to the eventual collapse of the USSR.
