Maos thought included letting peasents and lower class people to take the lead. 
They used a lot of propaganda 
Peasants where benefiting from this the most. They got land reform. They got land back from the land lords and the landlords where killed 
Women where given new rights such as education, work marriage. In 1911 China dropped the dynastic system after 3,000 years
After a long war the communists won, and soon after Mao lead the country. Mao produced lots of grains which made lots of money. This put Mao on the impression that he had some momentum going so he decided that farmers should produce steel
It didn't work
It was bad steel and since all the grains were mostly exported lots of farmers died of starvation
Then came the cultural revolution which made China get rid of everything old and replace it with new

  • What was the Great Leap Forward?         a. When was it? A series of policies aimed to industrialize China                        b. What was the goal? Have a new industrialized China and surpass the competition
  • What is collectivization? Putting thousands of peasants into communes
  • What is industrialization? How was the experience of China's attempt at industrialization different than those of Britain and the United States? To develop the country. Mao wanted to industrialize China with several times the populataion of Britain and do it in only 15 years
  • How many people were forced into communes? 750 million
  • What happened by 1959? Name three things. Industrialization was going well for some time, good harvest, and a winter of famine
  • What led to the famine? No food being grown, floods, etc.
  • Why did Mao launch the campaign? Because he wanted to surpass the competition of America and Britain
  • What were some of the terrible consequences of the Great Leap Forward on the Chinese population? 35-45 million people died, one of the biggest man made catastrophes over in human history.
