Critical thinking & composing

This artifact was a part of our unit 2 final submission which required us to create a digital story and tell it through a genre we had to choose. We had to select between a StoryMap or Fotonovela, I chose to do a StoryMap. I did my StoryMap on the University and why it was a good choice to consider attending for future students. I combined both my primary research and secondary research to create the artifact. Composing the project was easy but it was a hassle gathering my research. I used a tool called Powernotes that lets users take notes on websites and cite them automatically. The only issue I had was trying to be as non-biased as possible. Throughout my artifact, I did discuss many flaws that the UA but I made sure to give my honest opinion on everything I discussed. I also presented further information about everything I felt needed. For example, I talked about the cost at the UA and provided a picture of the cost for in-state and out-state students. This artifact will influence my composing skills for future assignments where I’ll have to combine research like this again.

Rhetorical Awareness

At the beginning of the semester, we were learning to analyze rhetorical awareness through 3 different sources. The sources included a book/poem, film, and website. The names of these sources were; The website was the Colbrì Center for Human Rights, a film titled “Border South” and a poem I chose named “Border Boy”. We were tasked to write a synthesis essay combining all of the sources. In my essay, I analyzed the 3 sources which included rhetorical awareness. We practiced the analysis by comparing these 3 different genres and learning their similarities and differences through their writing in our annotation matrix assignment in class. Throughout my second paragraph, I mentioned how all 3 of the artifacts have the same purpose, highlighting how they each express the struggles that immigrants have regarding the border. This’ll help me in the future with being able to ulitilze rhetorical situations in my future writing assignments.

Conventions

In preparation for our synthesis essay, we used an annotation matrix as an outline to help draft our essay and sort out the 3 sources to compare them. There were 8 boxes that were available to fill which included author purpose, rhetorical conventions, etc. I had trouble telling the difference between rhetorical analysis and conventions. In class before we started drafting our essays, a classmate and I made an outline for our paragraphs that assisted us in differentiating between rhetorical conventions and other rhetorical types which used to confuse me. In my annotation matrix, I was able to give concise ideas for each source, realizing that the annotation matrix gave us the opportunity to practice indeifying the rhetorical moves. In the future, I’ll be able to be flexible with how I pressent my rhetrocial conventions to further my stance on different topics.

Developing a sense of belonging (and examine [dis]belonging), to build purpose in our writing lives

This artifact is one of my papelito guardados which was our in-class writing. It’s a writing exercise that we did at the end of the week 10 minutes before class ended. We had to do 10 of them and each papelito had 3 prompts that we had to choose from and write about. In Papelito 10, one of the prompts was writing about what land grant institution had to do with you and your future which is the one I selected. In class, we referenced land grant institutions many times. We did a discussion board as homework in the first week which is where I started to understand and form awareness of UA as a land-grant institution. We had to read a document about UA land acknowledgment. This document talked about how local indigenous leaders from numerous years ago helped shaped the UA today. These indigenous people were the O'odham and the Yaqui with their tribes being home here in Tucson. This is why the UA recognizes and respects these indigenous people. In my 10th papelito, I talked about how the UA land grant aids me. This gave me an idea of how I'm grateful to be able to attend the UA which gives me a sense of belonging. I feel like these ideas will benefit my ability to write about a sense of belonging in future assignments

Reflection

Before we worked on our digital storytelling projects, we had to make cover pages to lay out the context of our story. This included giving a description of the purpose, intended audience, evidence, and conventions. After we finished, we had to provide a final reflection on the project as a whole. I did find my digital story to be more about my experiences and opinionated which I feel is characterized by personal writing. When I was writing my reflection, it made me want to be acknowledged for my effort. In the final reflection, I said that “I hope the people who view this StoryMap learn something from it and find it insightful.”. I want my StoryMap to be reviewed and returned with constructive criticism that’ll let me know if I’m doing a great job. I feel like this artifact aligns with personal writing heavily and will influence me to become a unique writer in the future.

There are many other things I need to still accomplish and improve but, that doesn’t change my overall progress this year. When the year first started, I panicked because I didn’t understand the workload that was going to hit me. Though, I'm glad that I went through it all because my writing benefited from it, especially this semester. I feel I’ve improved my rhetorical skills a bit more than last semester. It still needs work but I’m on the right path. In Papelito 3, I referenced how I struggle with academic writing and tried my best to get better. I realized that I take longer to think of sentences on the spot for in-class activities which made me feel insecure. I used to always be the last one to finish writing assignments. I always knew I had it in me to write great essays but the speediness never got me. I still struggle with this today, I focus hard on assignments but could never get them done in the timely manner I set for myself. Though, I did use it to my advantage to get my points through as I was thinking of what to write. I do use Google severely though to check my writing and spelling on words I’m not sure of which is what I mentioned in my 5th papelito. Besides schoolwork and writing, I’d say what really took me down this semester was my job. I spend so much money and it leaves me wanting to work more which takes away from school work. I usually work 20-25 hours a week and take 15 credits. Procrastination doesn’t help with it either since I usually get home after work and go to sleep from being so exhausted to do anything. I usually feel like giving up and feel like I can’t do it but, I know I can’t stop because of my family. They are what motivate me to get up every day and don’t want to fail. I referenced in my first papelito that it is what resonates with family and friends. Throughout this semester I’ve learned a lot about myself and my academic writing skills. I’ve also recognized the goals that I set for myself and was able to achieve. A goal II was able to achieve was organization. The synthesis essay helped me organize my ideas clearly and allowed me to be way less vague than I usually am. A value that I was able to reach was authenticity. I feel in every assignment I turned in was authentic and my true self talking. With all of this being said, I know everything will I learned in this course will help later down the path as I want to break into the creative writing world. The work in this course influenced me to indulge in it. I’ve also realized I memorized all of the rhetorical appeals, conventions, and situations which will come be utilized next year for ENGL 109H. Overall, this semester has done wonders for my work but, I can’t say that it was a perfect ride.
