The closer people are to the equator, the darker their skin pigment is and vice versa because the closer you are to the equator, the hotter it is and the darker skin becomes because of all the melanin that is produced. Melanin, the skin's brown pigment, is a natural sunscreen that protects tropical peoples from the many harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays. As people moved to areas farther from the equator with lower UV levels, natural selection favored lighter skin which allowed UV rays to activate and produce vitamin D.

Source: http://humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/genetics/human-skin-color-variation/modern-human-diversity-skin-color

There is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and the amount of melanin you have in your skin. If you have a lot of melanin in your skin, (Dark-skinned) then you're cell are well protected. However, due to the amount of melanin, your body can not make vitamin D from sunlight.

Source: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-10-26/news/ct-x-1026-health-briefs-20111026_1_vitamin-d-deficiency-skin-sun-exposure
