It is important to recognize the benefit that technology in the classroom has on student learning. The students of today are entering classroom spaces with a great depth of technological skills, and these skills can be used for the benefit of their learning. The incorporation of technology in the classroom adds to the variety and diversity of learning methods for students in the classroom. In using technology, students are given the space to explore and learn in ways that are relevant. It allows for students and teachers to move beyond the traditional method of teaching and learning (i.e. handouts, etc.) and provide students the opportunity to engage and demonstrate their learning and findings in ways that are meaningful to them.

Technology: Facilitating Co-learning and Community Building in the Classroom

The exposure we (upcoming educators) have had to technology, in comparison to students, can limit our progress if we as educators, are unable to adapt. It is important to appreciate the experts that can easily navigate spaces that we are still learning. Therefore, by allowing students to become the teachers, they learn how to teach and educators learn how to use the resources. In addition, the dynamic roles that both teachers and students play in a classroom that allows them to break their expected roles, allows for the construction of community. Classroom community is formed by including and allowing students to play a key role in the learning process of their peers and teacher. Therefore, the responsible implementation of technology in the classroom can help promote co-learning and community in classrooms.

Technology with Purpose

The biggest takeaway from this course so far is that it is important to use technology purposely in my classroom. The SAMR model helped me conceptualize this idea as a spectrum that I can navigate when planning my lessons and class activities. Though technology can serve as a substitute to pencil and paper, it is also an medium to engage students and redefine the way we see education. Allowing students to design their own book electronically (iBooks) and/or taking my students on a virtual field trip, are examples of activities that could not happen without technology. Additionally, a lot of the media we consume on a day to day basis is edited and created online, so allowing students to develop these skills through different softwares is preparing them for future job opportunities. It is also a way to engage students and tap into different learning styles. With technology it is much easier to find visual representations of mathematical concepts, audio books, and interactive stimulations for kinesthetic learners. It is our duty to keep navigating different online platforms and learning about new apps that our students can benefit from.
