During November and December, I realized that film is very difficult to put together, I learned that it is something that looks so simple and easy. When in reality film is the complete opposite. The intricate style and themes make a film and without editing sound, screenplay, and writing format the quality would lack. We watched a clip from the film Thelma and Louise and it showed me the importance of sound and editing and how it impacts film. Reading the Incredibles Screenplay and writing our own script helped show the difficulties of film and the intricacy of making different aspects of a film.

What were the requirements of your midterm final project?

Our film is scored based on following the rubric one to two minutes long, horror or horror hybrid, nothing wildly inappropriate, minimal dialogue, no long takes, start in black with logo or graphic, start in black with title (and optional credits), straight cut or dissolve to opening image, minimum three crosscuts between actor and dream, close up, Dutch angle, high or low angle, low key light set up or silhouette, pan or tilt or track or push or spinaround, zoom or dolly zoom, subliminal cut or multitake or smash cut, match cut, J cut or L cut, slow or fast motion, intentional use of color, intentional production design (costumes, make up, hair), visual complexity (setting), three sound effects, incidental music or sound motif (3x), general creativity.

Which elements did you include as part of the basic assignment?  What elements did add for extra credit, if any?

My film was 1.26 minutes long so it met the one to two minutes long criteria. My film was a Horror/ Comedy making it a hybrid. I did not make anything wildly inappropriate. I have minimal dialogue, and no long takes. I started in black with the logo, I started in black with the title. I also put in additional credits. I straight cut to the opening clip. I have a minimum of three crosscuts between the actor and dreams. I shot a close-up of the dreamer, The ending incorporated the Dutch angle, many high and low angles in the dream, and low-key light set up on the plane. I panned throughout the film. I zoomed into the dreamer, a subliminal cut, a match cut on the helicopter, A j cut, fast motion, intentional use of color in my film, intentional production design (costumes, makeup, hair), visual complexity (setting), three sound effects were included, incidental music or sound motif (3x), and I feel I incorporated general creativity.

What people or ideas did you represent?

The main character represents a mother in her 50s who is going on vacation. She is scared that something bad will happen. (helicopter falling).

How did you adhere to conventions?  How did you break conventions?

Normally in Horror films, there is a dark or black-and-white film with intense music, I incorporated that. I broke conventions by making my film about a place that is supposed to be paradise making a nice gorgeous vacation turning into terror.

What techniques did you use to engage your audience?

I made my film more social media based because today on movie platforms like Netflix. Movies are becoming more digital, while still incorporating the basic movie trailer characteristics.

How did your production/editing skills grow throughout this project? What did you learn how to do that you didn't know how to do before? 

When filming this I had to retake shots multiple times to get the one I wanted. I didn't realize editing would take as long as it did. I learned how to incorporate sound in film and how to do it intentionally.

What technologies (hardware and software) did you use at every stage of this project (script, shooting, editing, sound, graphics, music)?

My script draft was on arc studios, but when I filmed I realized the film would be more advanced with no words. No words made the viewer more enticed by the visual composition. I shot on an iPhone camera, I used a drone for the credit clip, editing/ graphics I used video leap, I used the app "add music" for sound/ music.

What was successful about the piece you created, and what wasn't?  Reflect on key moments from the film.

I believe that the quality of the film was really nice, I think that if I got more film I could have made it into a cinematic masterpiece. Making a movie out of my trailer would be really fun. The best part in my opinion was the frozen clips with text.

How did you approach your production design?  

On a 7-hour plane ride there I started my film ideas and how I wanted to shoot my clips. Then on the way back home, I filmed and edited.

What was your biggest lesson on this project about what you will or won't do differently next time?

Next time I would like to use more intricated production styles while still keeping the film advanced.

2.  What is the genre and who is the target audience for this film?

The genre is a drama film. The target audience is 18 and up because there is adult representation.

3.  Describe the opening credits and title sequences, including any company logos or idents.  When do they appear?  What color/font are they using? How does it "align" with the opening of the film?  Anything else you notice?

In this film, there are three idents and then it goes straight into the film. The colors are white and blue and they are on a black screen. In a way, this shows the black-and-white life the main character has. 

3.  Describe it visually -- a shot  by shot breakdown that includes type of shot/movement, if any.

In the 2 minutes, there are a lot of clips with people or items spinning around, but in all of them, he is the main focus. I think this portrays the widespread challenges and commotion going on around him but at the same time, it's also the feeling of being the center of attention. Which he was as a kid. Lots of close-ups and over-the-shoulder shots portray how this is a film about one kid.

4.  Describe the sound -- another "sound by sound" of the entire two minutes. 

His voice is a part of the two minutes as he tells his life story. His voice is soft and kind.

5. Describe how you felt at the end of the two minutes.  Did you want to know more?  What was left hanging, if anything?  What questions do you still have?

yes, I wanted to know what was wrong with him. I wanted to know why the doctor rushed away. 

6.  How would you describe the editing style in this clip?  Any particular editing techniques you noticed, or the length of shots?  

Lots of tracking shots, over-the-shoulder, close-up, and breaking the rule of thirds.

7.  How did these first two minutes adhere to conventions?

The film adheres to the conventions of a little boy talking about himself like the world revolves around him. As a kid, we all use to think that so it adheres to conventions. 

8.  How did these first two minutes break with conventions?

Something going wrong compared to things going correctly breaks conventions. A viewer is expecting to see a handsome baby, but that doesn't happen.

9.  How did these first two minutes represent social groups or people or issues?  

Not everything is what it seems and bad things happen its what we do to solutionize these problems. 

10. Why do you think this film was distributed on this particular site?

This film was portrayed on youtube. People go to youtube to see trailers and learn more about different topics. Seeing the opening two minutes on youtube makes sense. Youtube is very familiar to many people. 

11.    EXTRA CREDIT:  Any other thoughts or comments or realizations you had about film openings after viewing this clip?

The film opening is the most important part of the film in my opinion. It is what starts the film and shows the viewer what the film is about.

The first two minutes was of the title sequence coming in colorful then a dark radio room with a woman speaking to a bunch of men.

Comedy with a male audience ages 18 and up.

The title sequence was quick, little, and colorful.

In the beginning it's a dark high shot that tracks the radio guy walking into the room. There are men sitting behind a glass wall laughing as a woman speaks about her problems on the radio station. 

4. Describe the sound -- a "sound by sound" analysis of the entire first two minutes. 

There was a muffled voice sound throughout the film with the women and the male talking. There was also a lot of 80s music playing in and out.

5. Describe how you felt at the end of the two minutes. Did you want to know more? What was left hanging, if anything? What questions do you still have?

I wanted to know what the girl looked like and i wanted to know why the male radio guy was being such a mean person. I wanted to know the background.

6. How would you describe the editing style in this clip? Any particular editing techniques you noticed, or length of shots?  

The editing style in this film incorporates many high shots. It also has many tracking shots.

7. How did these first two minutes adhere to conventions?

The first two minutes were dark and gloomy looking but the male figure made a lot of jokes that could be seen funny to a male audience.

8. How did these first two minutes break with conventions?

The darkness made it seem like a horror when it was not a horror film.

9. How did these first two minutes represent social groups or people or issues?  

It represents how sexism is a big part of this world and how males view themselves as superior.

10. Why do you think this film was originally distributed in the way that it was?

I think it was distributed on youtube, netflix, hulu, HBO max, and amazon prime.

I feel like in the film with the homeless man we would need a short take and slo-mo of the guy hitting the little boy. It should be comical as the object slaps the side of the boy's face. We are filming in the dark at the beach using a flashlight intentionally as the boy walks around. Using the light from the flashlight I can edit the altercation and zoom into the lighting cutting to the boy waking up in the morning with a ripped shirt from the night prior. 

In the beginning I want Bright colors and a centered logo that floats in with a happy demeanor completely the opposite of the dark humor comedy we are trying to display. I want this to break conventions. I want the homeless man walking on the beach singing and doing messed up things to people. As the music is very pop and exciting it breaks representation. 

I think straight cuts will be very important. I don't like the look of dissolves, fades, etc. they look cheesy.

Using the app to add music on my phone I won't have a single problem with copyright. I've used it many times and I've had no problems.

 

 

 

1.  If you were to distribute your film independently, how would you do it?  

If I were to distribute my film independently I'd use TVOD and AVOD options — such as YouTube and Vinemo  Another great platform for independent filmmakers seeking film distribution is BingeWave.

For instance, if you think your film could/should get theatrical distribution, would you try to get a film distributor (or sales agent if the distributor required one)? If so, who and why?  How are they a good fit for your film?  And what film festivals or film markets would you go to try to get a distributor or studio interested in your film and why?  ‘

Yes, I would try to get a film distributor. I would try to get Youtube, Netflix, Paramount. I would also need a sales agent. I can find these on social media and on different occupation websites. This would be good for our film because I’d be able to delegate responsibility. The only downside is these things will take profits. The Florida and Orlando film festivals would be the festivals I’d attend.

Now, if you are only interested in streaming (or think this is the best route for your film), which aggregator would you approach and why?  Also, what smaller, niche streaming services might you be able to approach directly, and why?  

Streaming is a good option for us but not the only option. AMC+, and peacock are some smaller streaming services if we wanted to go that route. 

2. What is the title of your film? Do you think your title works?  Why or why not (short and sweet, pithy, reflective of genre, aimed at target audience, etc.)?  How could it be improved and why?  Do you have a new title now?

Mr.  Missguided is our film name, and I think it works with our film. Our genre has changed and now we are producing a drama about a woman who is treated poorly and how a homeless man treats a man like a king. Our title before was glizzy and it had no reflection of our film. 

3.  Create a tagline for your poster.  Aim for familiar but fresh.  Remember your genre, and your target audience.

“What are you gonna do if you're just a woman?”

 

5.  Using your notes from number four above, think about how your could reach that target audience if you were self distributing your film on Youtube or Vimeo or a similar platform.   How can you use that information to REACH them?  Where will you advertise?  INDICATE, FOR EACH GROUP, TEN PLACES WHERE YOU WOULD PLACE ADS TARGET ADS/TEASERS/TRAILERS (six virtual, four nonvirtual), and WHY, and mention that you would do this if you had to SELF DISTRIBUTE.

 I could reach them by having google ads with the title, Ads on instagram, Tiktok, and facebook. In person I’d put flyers in higher end grocery stores, malls, nail salons, hair salons, and schools. I would do these places because these are common places women go.

6.  How would you ENGAGE your target audience online?  How will you turn passive audience members into ACTIVE, ENGAGED audience members? This is in reference to pull marketing (or interactive marketing).  How will you get them to click on your ads?  What would you offer them in the form of promotions?  How would you incentivize them to repost/retweet/share/forward your ad?  Please INCLUDE SOME OUT OF THE BOX THINKING!  Audience engagement must be addressed in your critical reflections.  

 By making these people see my ads so many times so they have to eventually act on it. I would had a apparel company that merchandise my slogan “You're just a women what can you do” and make the hashtag #womenimpowerment go viral and go with my film.

 I would have a women be the front and center eye catching image and the homeless man under her heel and I’d have her dressed in pink and white. I would have the font bolded and the girl would be holding a phone rolling her eyes.

8. BONUS/EXTRA CREDIT ONLY!   Identify any trends happening currently in the marketing of other recent films in your genre.  Explain how you might incorporate this into your own self-marketing. Alternately, describe a film in your genre that had an amazing marketing campaign.  Explain why, and identify what elements of that campaign you might "steal" for your own marketing campaign. 

In marketing, we can see social media apps being used a lot more to get views. I loved legally blondes marketing Legally Blonde was released on July 13, 2001 in North America. Its opening weekend gross of $20 million made it a sleeper hit for the struggling MGM studio, and it went on to gross $96.5 million in North America and $45.2 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $141.7 million. The Musical premiered on January 23, 2007, in San Francisco and opened in New York City at the Palace Theatre on Broadway on April 29, 2007, starring Laura Bell Bundy.

Drama films generally portray women as powerless, weak, whiny, and under male dominance. Women have a very powerful, important role in society, and I believe films should show this. In our film “Mr. Missguided” we wanted to portray every aspect of Drama films while still making our film portray women's empowerment. The opening clip portrays me (Isabella Gorelik) walking out of an apartment to go to work. Eli Brawley (playing the homeless man) is looking like he is in awe of me, contributing to the overall theme of women in power. In this clip, we are watching Eli Brawley looking aggressive and neurotic. The gender roles are being switched here because conventionally Women are always portrayed as weak, emotional, and neurotic while men are expected to be strong, aggressive, and dominant.

Women should not be highlighted as weak or inferior. We are the exact opposite: we are powerful, intelligent, and hard-working. This film shows this. This film is the opposite of what normal Drama films portray, while still staying in line with conventional drama films. 

The most well-known example of this is in superhero movies. Men in lead roles showed their power and overall dominance since the beginning of the film industry. It wasn't until the first female superhero movie which was called SUPERGIRL was released in 1984. Film displaying moving pictures to a paying audience was started only in 1895 therefore it took 89 years for there to be a woman represented as strong and powerful in the superhero end of the film. 

2. If it were a "real" film, how would it be distributed and how would you engage audiences?

Since I'm self-distributing my film, and trying to get on major VOD platforms, an aggregator is essential. I would be able to find these film aggregators at film festivals. I also would take advantage of platforms like youtube that allow me to post content free of charge. The more eyes that view my film the more self-fulfilled I would feel.

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this process?  

My film group originally decided to make a comedy but after we filmed and viewed our content we decided we needed to change the plot. Here I will be showing you how my editing skills changed from the first film to the second. 

4. How did you integrate technology -- software, hardware, online -- for this project?  

In this film, we used a Professional Camera. It was a Sony A7C. This is what it looks like. I used editing techniques from multiple platforms such as premier pro, Video Leap, sound effects, and Foley. All of this different software was added to our film.
