Power is more dependent upon the experience and knowledge of an individual rather than social status alone, if a person has more knowledge they hold the most power or influence. This can be seen on the boat with the boatswain; the nobles on board had the highest social status and yet were useless when they encountered a storm, only the boatswain could navigate them through such trials. The boatswain explains to Gonzalo, one of the king's councilmen, that if he cannot use his social status to ward off the storm he should remain silent and should " give thanks [that he]... lived so long," Gonzalo explains to the other nobles that "[he has] great comfort from this fellow..../ he hath no drowning mark upon him" (Shakespeare 1.1.25,29-30). The boatswain was the only person who could bring them through the storm successfully, almost everyone turned to him, even some of the nobles gave the boatswain power and respected him because he had more knowledge of the situation.

Answers to the questions on the TV: Ariel shows his power in many different ways, as he is a magical spirit that aids Prospero in his control over the island. He is the cause of both the storm that brought down the ship and the protection of the people on board, he also can be undetectable by everyone other than Prospero. He doesn't use his power for either good or evil, he is currently under the control of another person and is not acting out of his desires.

Perspective

Perspective is dependent upon life experiences, as life experiences shape a person and their viewpoints and dictate a person's responses. Prospero is an example of this; his power was taken away from him and he was outcasted. He was betrayed by his brother, who Prospero explains would "presently extirpate [him] and [Miranda]/ Out of the dukedom, and confer fair Milan" (Shakespeare 1.2.149-150). These life experiences are the reasons why he is defensive about his state of power. His background influenced his perspective to be focused only on his needs and influenced his decision to imprison the island inhabitants; his past experiences also influenced him to become more closed off and defensive.

Answers to the questions on the TV:

Prospero has the most accurate perspective in the story, he can see people for what they can be but can also provide trust to others. Miranda has the worst perspective, she is very ignorant and has no knowledge of the real world, she is also unaware of the selfish things her father is doing because he raised her under his ideals. Since Prospero knows of the horrible deeds people can commit he acts out of fear and is only concerned with protecting Miranda and his current state of power. Miranda acts this way because she is naive and innocent and knows nothing of the actions of other people, she has only been shown his perspective.

Theme for Act 2 - Perspective

Once people can shift their perspective from something negative to something that gives them purpose, they can change their positions or outcomes. This can be seen with Gonzalo in Act 2, as he was the only one who saw the positives in their traumatic situation, he was the only one who could've changed his outcome. He expressed, "Beseech you, sir, be merry. You have cause— / So have we all—of joy, for our escape / Is much beyond our loss" (Shakespeare 2.1.1-3). Gonzalo wanted the other men to be grateful for their situation, so they could alter their mentalities. However, they were not able to make adjustments, they were overcome with sorrow and greed; and once they were presented with something positive, they were not appreciative and became selfish. Due to this, they were not able to change their outcomes. When presented with the resource to satisfy their hunger, the men boldly thought they were entitled to it, but Gonzalo approached the situation differently and expressed that, "their manners are more gentle, kind, than of / Our human generation you shall find /... Each putter-out of five for one will bring us / Good warrant of / ... [Alonso] I will stand to feed [from the table]... [Ariel] You are three men of sin" (Shakespeare 3.3.39-40,64-65,70). As a result of Gonzalo's demeanor, he was able to receive items to replenish his hunger, because he changed his mindset he was rewarded and was able to change his outcome, whereas the other three were called out for their selfish behaviors and remained in the negative moments.

When leaders start to become weak or flawed, others will formulate plans to overthrow their leaders and replace them with a higher power. This can be seen with Stephano and Caliban, Caliban had been enslaved by Prospero, a leader that he viewed to be flawed, Caliban views Prospero as " a tyrant, a sorcerer, that by his cunning hath / cheated [him] of the island" (Shakespeare 3.2.46-48). To Caliban, Prospero is an evil man who had wrongfully enslaved him and deprived him of all the good things the island had to offer. Since Prospero is viewed as a flawed leader, Caliban, as soon as a potential higher power appears, betrays the former leader and formulates plans to overthrow him: "yea, yea, my lord. I’ll yield him thee asleep, / Where thou mayst knock a nail into his head" (Shakespeare 3.2.67-68). Caliban provided Stephano with a cruel and basic plan to remove Prospero from power.
