Altruistic Behavior is when can we can observe selfless acts come from animals. Basically, this is behavior that can be seen when their actions benefit others more than themselves. This can be examples of animals protecting their own, putting the lives of their children in front of their own, or just helping others in general. A very good example of this can be a loyal dog giving it's life in order to save the owner.

Is Altruism an Adaptive Behavior?

Altruistic behavior can be seen as an adaptive trait. For example, if an animal had risked it's life for another in the wild, this could help them know their stance with one another and help each other survive. This behavior allows for animals to possibly bond and create connections to each other, despite the fact that they are different species. With this in mind, these two animals from the different species may have different abilities, and can care for each other in strange ways.

When I look at this behavior by myself, I am amazed. I truly am surprised with the way that nature has given chance to animals caring for each other and not just surviving for themselves. I have never experienced altruistic behavior, and honestly, I didn't really know that this is what it was called until it was assigned to me. But this behavior allowed me to realize that humans aren't the only species that try to help other animals, and that the ecosystem and food chain out in the wild has many more elements rather than just survival of the fittest. Sometimes they look out for each other, and help each other survive and thrive. This amazes me, and has made me truly think that altruistic behavior may be the least heard of, but the most powerful behavior.

Some things that can be observed to identify altruistic behavior can be an animal nurturing others, an animal protecting it's pack or hive with it's life (possibly giving it's own life to ensure the survival of the others), and basically anything that puts the lives of others in front of it's own.
