In Seneca Falls, New York, the first most significant attempt to organize a national movement for women's rights took place on July 1848. The event was led by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. The meeting is well known for Stanton's call to arms: her "Declaration of Sentiments." 1875: In Minor v Happersett, SCOTUS rules that a state can prohibit a women from voting since although they are "persons," they are a "special category of _nonvoting_ citizens."

1890: Wyoming is the first state to give women the right to vote in all elections.

1900: at this point in time, every state has passed legislation which gives married women some control over their property and earnings.

1920: the 19th Amendment is ratified. It declares that the right of a US citizen to vote cannot be denied due to sex.
