Why or why not? en-us 2017-08-23 09:00:01 UTC 2025-12-18 07:03:30 UTC hello@padlet.com Collaboration https://padlet.com/christine_grove1/mipba81nsy7d/wish/285371374 In my role as a special class teacher I collaborate daily with the other special class teacher and my SSO, I also collaborate weekly with service providers that work with my students as we try to work on areas of concern together. 
In my role as senior leader for students with a disability I collaborate with all other teachers in the school as I listen to their needs and then try to respond in a way that will help both them and their student, I collaborate with families throughout the term and with DECD support services as I meet regularly with them to discuss student needs and funding. I find almost all collaboration helpful and useful for students, parents, teachers and the whole school community as everyone (usually) wants what is best for the student and by coming together to discuss what is going well and any concerns we might have we can work as a team to support our student. However, collaboration need to be just that, it cannot be one party telling everyone else what to do. We must listen to each other and then try to work together for a successful outcome.

There is a strong focus on professional development through the Professional Learning Community initiative. This means that we team teach, work and plan together and share the responsibility for all students. Any decisions are made collaboratively, all opinions are valued and respected. This has helped to change the culture within the school and the school community. The school also employs Allied Health workers including a speech therapist and an occupational therapist. This allows teachers and allied health workers to problem solve together. This collaborative nature of the school allows us to provide extensive support to student who require it. We will always try to involve the parents of a child in any decisions made about the education of their child. We have recently moved to a team teaching model throughout the entire school and each classroom has at least 1 education support staff (ES), often 2 or more. Our class sizes range between 10 and 25 or so students and ES staff are allocated according to student/classroom need. 

This is especially important as we are a special education setting and have students with high needs. 

Staff collaboration is encouraged at our school and this collaboration goes beyond the classroom to other schools and with allied health professionals as well as parents/carers and the community.

While there are significant benefits for staff and students to have extra eyes, hands and voices in the room, it requires a different skill set to work productively and effectively with others. There would be benefit in teacher education training programs to include some training on working with ES staff as well as with teaching colleagues and other stakeholders.

I enjoy how everyone has a slightly different perspective which can enrich my understanding of a child, their family and environment.
