Being an advisor is a lot of mentoring, helping students navigate new things. The advisory program is more of a moral education rather than academic education. The advisor is “that one adult” that a student can learn to trust. Advisory is a support for students academically, intellectually, and emotionally. Advisory is an opportunity for students to create friendships/connections outside of their typical friend group, and become exposed to different walks of life, circumstances, etc.

You are there advocate. For example, historically if one of your students got trouble, it was your responsibility to set up a disciplinary meeting. Your job would be as their advocate. Now we have changed, now you might not even be notified. That is making it hard to be an advocate if you don’t know. It was a more restorative system.
* Group sizes have also changed. Originally, they were larger. Groups seem more fractured now. * Similarly, it was different when we went from 7-12 to 9-12 the dynamics have changed.
* Is the purpose to connect with each student or to have them connect as a group? It is so important to work on promoting collaboration.
* It an opportunity to address some of the systemic issues that our young people face.
