  • A Japan household is usually made up by a married couple and their children. They tend to avoid living with their parents to avoid any effects in their marriage.
  • Even though households today are made up of two generations (parents and children). Back in the day households consisted of three generations. The grandparents, parents, and children. 
  • Ancestors are an important part of the family structure. They are even believed to be active family members.

  • Before WWII men were the head of household. Women would stay home to raise the children.
  • Today about half of the women in Japan are working. Even though the jobs are either part-time, temporary, or are low paying jobs. 
  • The second most used religion in Japan is Shinto. It is more of a ritual to connect with spirits. It is used to love and appreciate nature more. Shinto is known to be the oldest religion in Japan. 
  • The most popular religion in Japan is Buddhism. They became aware of this religion through China. Even though Buddhism came from India.

  • A flower arrangement that is very important in Japan is called Ikebana. It is used to show how important nature is. Religion plays an important part in the Ikebana. 
  • Removing your shoes should always be done when going out to eat. Whether it is at someone’s house or at a restaurant. 
  • Japanese people do not use middle names. Only a first and last name are given to them.
  • Much of their cultural values is showing respect and working with their family member.

  • Verbal communication is less important because they use more non-verbal communication
  • Open competition and confrontation is always avoided.
  • Families who are relatively close and are high class get called by their last name instead of their first names.

  • Greetings:  bowing down to people who are older than you or at a higher rank than you. Hand shakes are sometimes used as well. 
  • Negative emotion: a simple head tilt or small inhale. 
  • Posture: slouching is considered to be rude. It is also rude to stand too close to someone. 
  • Nodding:  during a conversation a simple nod shows that you are paying attention. Even if you have nothing to say.

  • Weddings are serious and important events. Same sex marriages are not legal in Japan.
  • People get discriminated for getting a divorce. Not very common for Japanese people to get a divorce. 
  • A love matcher is usually a close friend or a relative that helps get two people to start dating. 
  • Marriages are usually taken place in a shinto shrine. This is part of the Shinto religion. Many hotel in Japan have a shinto shrine to have traditional weddings.
